Pet Instagram Review: Takechiyo the Japanese otter enjoys swimming, being pet

Something that’s become apparent while writing this blog is my distinct obsession with wild animals who act domesticated. It’s a strange, almost middle finger to the order of nature. It’s something I neither condone nor condemn, but rather, I choose to act as an impartial observer of this phenomenon.

The most recent addition to my extensive instagram following is Takechiyo (@ponchan918), a Japanese otter with over 92 thousand followers. His page appears to be entirely in Japanese, so the language barrier makes it very difficult for me to understand what is happening.

Quality of Pictures

This account consists heavily of videos — which is arguably more effective than pictures in this case. This medium allows the viewer to see every movement of this otter, who moves and behaves like a hybrid of a dog and a ferret.

In addition to pictures of Takechiyo, there are a few confusing pictures on this account that I cannot figure out the significance of. One particular example is a photo of a golf course — with no otter in sight. Other posts show pictures of food like burgers and pie, again with no otters. I don’t mind the occasional food picture, but I came here to see otters, not hamburgers.

Rate of Posts

This account is a very frequent poster. You’ll see about two to three pictures and videos a day, which is a lot of otter to handle. Don’t worry about being left in the dark: Takechiyo will be front and center in your daily feed.

Cuteness of Pet

Takechiyo is a very cute otter. He makes otter squeaks and appears to be very friendly. He likes to cuddle and be pet, which is probably not something you would expect from just any otter. He loves to take baths and is a naturally good swimmer.

Rating: 3/5

The photography is nothing special on this account, and some photos aren’t related to otters at all. But when the subject matter is otter-related, you’ll get some very enjoyable videos of Takechiyo swimming and eating, which is worth dealing with the language barrier and pictures of burgers.
