Anne Hathaway has gone through some notable movie transformations.
The actress has played a high schooler turned princess, a seamstress who had to sell herself, and a bridezilla — and that’s just scratching the surface. In honor of her 34th birthday, here is a look at the most iconic role transformations Hathaway has undergone.
In her first movie role, the frizzy-haired high schooler Mia Thermopolis finds out she is not as ordinary as she seems. It turns out her grandmother is Julie Andrews — which, let’s face it, is the ultimate grandmother goal — and she is the Queen of Genovia. By default, Mia has become the next in line for the crown. Halfway through the movie, Andrews’ character calls in the help of hairdresser Paolo (Larry Miller). Paolo manages to tame Mia’s curly ‘do at the expense of a hairbrush, bringing about the most legendary movie transformation of any ‘90s kids’ childhood.

Hathaway plays Andy Sachs, a woman who lands the biggest assistant job in New York City working for Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) — the editor-in-chief for the fictitious fashion magazine Runway. Sachs’ frumpy attire does not fit in with the clean-cut and fashionable outfits of the magazine’s employees, so in attempt to make it in the fashion industry, she swaps her sweaters and corduroy skirts for sleek jackets and stylish hats.

Her cunning nature and her stealthiness become an asset to Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) who is hiding under the disguise of Batman. By the end of the film, Catwoman puts her criminal ways aside and helps Batman save the city of Gotham from the villain Bane and his mischievous boss.

Hathaway went through a literal transformation on the set of Les Misérables. After Fantine (Hathaway) loses her job as a seamstress in a factory, she has to find other means to provide for her child, Cosette, and becomes a “lady of the night.” Hathaway did some method acting and allowed her hair to be chopped off while the camera was rolling. Her emotional performance in the film earned her an Academy Award.
