As the race begins, participants burst through the starting line, down court street during Bare on the Bricks on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014.

Bare on the Bricks canceled due to low participation, fundraising continues

The eighth annual Bare on the Bricks was set to take place on Saturday but was canceled earlier this week due to low registration numbers.

It is unclear if the event will be rescheduled because of low registration numbers, Makenzie Olaker, president of Ohio University’s Student Alumni Board, said.

“We want to come up with something that increases engagement,” she said.

The Student Alumni Board, the Nutrition Club and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity planned this year’s event together.

The run typically takes place during Spring Semester, and participants donate clothes and shed their layers. In previous years, the event has raised more than $1,000.

Phi Kappa Psi recruits involvement within Sorority and Fraternity Life, the Student Alumni Board and Nutrition Club also work to recruit participants.

Previously, the run has been rescheduled due to weather, but not because of the number of participants. In February 2015, the race was postponed, but the participants who registered went to the #NearlyNaked party at the Pigskin Bar and Grille. The run took place later that year in April.

“It’s strange that they would cancel the event because (Bare on the Bricks has) been going on for years and it’s Phi Kappa Psi’s main philanthropy event each year,” Aaron McQuade, a junior studying computer science, said.

Clothing from the seventh annual event was donated to My Sister’s Place, a domestic violence shelter that serves Athens and nearby counties. Fiscal donations were given to the organization Keep Noah Rolling, a local charity that helped Noah Trembly purchase a new van. Trembly was born with cerebral palsy.

This year, Bare on the Bricks tabled at the top of Baker Center and collected donations for Live Healthy Appalachia, an organization based in Athens that promotes health and wellness in the region. Bare on the Bricks planned on donating clothing to My Sister’s Place again.

“We will be doing more in the spring to meet our commitment for donations (to Live Healthy Appalachia),” Olaker said.
