New collaboration combines the best of The Chainsmokers and Coldplay

The Chainsmokers' newest track, a collaboration with Coldplay, "Something Just Like This," combines what fans love from both musical talents.

The Chainsmokers are no doubt known for the track "Roses," released in 2015, which has over 500 million plays on Spotify alone. The drop for "Roses," which was built from different chords layered over each other, is pretty unusual and easily recognizable. There's a lot more that goes into it, but it would take too long to explain.

Chris Martin, lead singer of the alternative band Coldplay, is pretty well known for his strong vocals. In fact, Martin is no stranger to the EDM genre. In the past, he's had a role on Avicii's unreleased track "Heaven" — Avicii also helped co-produce Coldplay's 2014 hit "A Sky Full of Stars."

That is why it comes as no surprise that combining Martin and The Chainsmokers produced such a great song.

"Something Just Like This" opens with guitar strings and synths playing in the background, reminiscent of another Chainsmokers track, "Paris."

Martin's lyrics help take listeners on a nostalgic trip back to their childhood as well, referencing tales of superheroes and mythical Greek warriors.

As the energy of the track increases, Martin flawlessly transitions into the pre-chorus and then the bridge.

Finally, the beat drops — that is where the track shines. A variation of the "Roses" drop, but simplified and slightly redone to blend in perfectly with Martin's voice, "Something Just Like This" is sure to be the next big Chainsmokers hit.

The only complaint about the track could be how long the drop itself actually lasts before cutting back into the second verse. On "Something Just Like This," the instrumentals after the buildup last a mere 17 seconds. A significant difference from "Roses," which has instrumentals that last over a minute before the second verse begins.

In the end, "Something Just Like This" is still not as good as "Roses," but, unlike more recent releases, it's refreshing to finally hear The Chainsmokers return to their EDM roots.
