Student Senate: Body to vote on four resolutions

Ohio University Student Senate will vote on four resolutions at its second meeting of the year Wednesday night.

A resolution to form the Committee on Community and Social Activity would create a group required by the rules and procedures “necessary to further the personal development” of the senate body, according to the resolution.

The committee would be staffed by Abby Siatkowski, Joe Frate, Matt Mamone, Connor Attrell, Olivia Mirich, Zachary Weeks and Lydia Ramlo.

A resolution to amend the Senate Appropriations Commissioner’s General Body Requirements would require Senate Appropriations Commissioners to attend every senate general body meeting and allow them one vote.

Senate Appropriations Commissioners are currently required to attend a general body meeting every two weeks.

The bill’s secondary sponsor is Haley Klier, the incumbent Senate Appropriations Commissioner.

A resolution to redefine the titles of SAC senators and delegates would change the title of all nine senators under the Financial Affairs Committee to senator or delegate at-large for Senate Appropriations. Should the motion pass, the rules and procedures would be updated to reflect that change.

A resolution to reinforce the Senate Appropriations Commission’s commitment to sustainability would require all funded events to adhere to the Office of Sustainability’s definition of a “Green Event” when possible.

The resolution would also require the Senate Appropriations Commission to have a representative from the Environmental Affairs Commission at every general body meeting to advise the commission to fund applications with the best sustainable practices.

Student Senate President Landen Lama said he expects all resolutions to pass.

Lama said he will give an update during his president’s report about the university’s policy on freedom of expression and the right to use outdoor space.

“Hopefully at tomorrow night’s meeting we will get a lot of information about commissions,” Lama said. “We’re doing a lot, but don’t necessarily talk about it at every general body meeting. There’s a lot of strategic planning that goes on behind the scenes.”

The senate also addressed President Donald Trump’s call to end the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, in a Tuesday press release. The program, implemented five years ago under the Obama administration, protects nearly 800,000 young, undocumented immigrants in the United States.

“As students, DACA beneficiaries are not just numbers on paper, they are our peers, our roommates and our friends,” the statement read. “Should this program come to an end, the fabric of our community will be irreparably harmed with no clear way to heal.”

Shortly after Trump made his announcement, OU President Nellis released a statement reaffirming his commitment to the program, and said he would travel to Capitol Hill to meet face-to-face with congressional representatives.
