Today is the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month; Get ready for flu season with tips from medical professionals

Whether you’re Hispanic or have friends, family and classmates who are, Hispanic Heritage Month starts today, and it’s a great time to learn more about Hispanic culture. 

Here are five facts about Hispanic Culture to celebrate the month: 

  1. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world after Chinese, according to Babble
  2. The Hispanic population of the U.S. stands at more than 57 million, according to the 2016 U.S. Census. 
  3. Nike is releasing a new collection of sneakers in partnership with four Latino artists in honor of the month, according to kicksonfire.com.
  4. As of 2014, the Hispanic population of Athens County is just more than 1,000, accounting for 2 percent of the population, according to the Pew Research Center. 
  5. The commemorative month lasts until Oct. 15 and starts today because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, according to a website dedicated to the month.
