October will bring major changes in Netflix’s lineup. Several B-rate comedies make their way onto the streaming service, and some beloved teen-centered shows won’t be there for the next generation to binge.
What’s New
Only a few spooky shows and movies are added for this Halloween season including Donnie Darko (Oct. 11). This Jake Gyllenhaal early work chronicles Donnie’s journey to find out what it means to be alive after he survives an unusual accident. The much anticipated season two of Stranger Things (Oct. 27) will also come to Netflix just in time for a binge weekend before the holiday.
Fans get more opportunities to laugh with forgotten comedic gems such as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (Oct. 13) and Miss Congeniality (Oct. 1). Now you won’t have to stop at a $5 bin to find them. Netflix fans can also view Paul Rudd’s attempt at bro bonding in I Love You, Man (Oct. 1).
A new cycle also means more award-winning films come to Netflix. Among the better picks is Blood Diamond for which Leonardo DiCaprio snagged one of his five Best Actor nominations that led up to his recent win. If you’re looking for a bit more risque film, try Eyes Wide Shut in which a doctor discovers a great deal about his sexuality and important morals when his wife reveals her cheating past. Viewers can also see Before Midnight, a film that could be called cousin of the Academy-Award winning film Boyhood in film style. It’s the third in the Before trilogy which show the characters mature with the audience over the course of two decades by filming at three distinct times.

What’s Leaving
The TV show losses of October will definitely leave a hole in Netflix’s offerings. A few popular comedic shows won’t be available including 30 Rock (Oct. 1) and Malcolm in the Middle (Oct. 1). Younger viewers are also going to miss seeing the high school dramatics shown in Friday Night Lights (Oct. 1) and One Tree Hill (Oct. 1).
During this month, Netflix will lose several well-known films: Million Dollar Baby (Oct. 1), The Shining (Oct. 1), Titanic (Oct. 1) and Mulholland Dr. (Oct. 1). These films split off into different genres, besides their dramatic elements, but are definitely unmissable watches.
