11 ways to celebrate Sweetest Day in Athens

Saturday is Sweetest Day, or that weird second Valentine’s Day that’s only officially celebrated in a handful of states the third Saturday in October.

Sweetest Day was celebrated for the first time in Cleveland in the early ‘20s. Although many people see Sweetest Day as nothing more than a marketing ploy by the candy industry, it’s gained some traction around the Midwest and a few other states as a day primarily for women to treat their significant others with candy or other treats.

If you’re in need of some fun date ideas to celebrate Sweetest Day, here are 11 seasonal ways to spend the day with your sweetie in Athens.

Carve a pumpkin

Get in the holiday spirit with your significant other by carving pumpkins. Pumpkins usually cost less than $10 each, and you can make your partner scoop out the slime for you in the name of love.

Visit a haunted attraction

Haunted attractions in the Athens area typically range from $9-15 in ticket prices. Take a spooky walk through a corn maze or wooded trail together for cheap Halloween fun.

Bake some fall treats

Hit up Kroger or the Athens Farmers Market and find some ingredients to make caramel apples, popcorn balls or a seasonal soup. Make it together or surprise your significant other with your heartfelt cooking.

Go on a hike

Athens has lots of beautiful hiking areas nearby at Strouds Run, Wayne National Forest and Hocking Hills State Park.

Have a Halloween movie marathon at home

Spend the day on the couch munching Halloween candy and watching Halloween flicks. Freeform’s 13 Nights of Halloween has officially started, and there are some other Halloween and horror classics on Netflix, like The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Addams Family and Sleepy Hollow.

Go out for a coffee date

Athens is #blessed with some top notch coffeehouses. Find a cozy spot in Donkey Coffee and Espresso or Court Street Coffee and order the seasonal specials.

Pick your own apples at an orchard

Unfortunately, there are no pick-your-own orchards in Athens, but you can take a road trip to Hidden Hills Orchard in Marietta to spend a day sipping cider and picking apples to take home with you.

Visit the Circleville Pumpkin Show

The Circleville Pumpkin Show is a huge deal in the area and attracts hundreds of thousands of people. There’s tons of live music, seasonal food and everything pumpkin-related you could imagine. Spend your Sweetest Day having all kinds of fall fun there.

Have a fall photo shoot

Grab another couple to help you out and have a cute fall photo shoot together. The trees in Athens are beautiful in the fall and you can spice up your Instagram with some cheesy pictures of you and your partner. Captions containing fall puns get bonus points.

Go Halloween costume shopping

The Halloween Block Party is just a week away! Head to Uptown Costumes, Athens Underground or Spirit Halloween and get creative to be the best dressed couple in town next weekend.
