'Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You' comes to Athens this weekend

Pokemon fans in Athens will have a chance to catch a special release of the 20th film in the franchise.

On Nov. 5 and 6, Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You will be released in select movie theaters, including the Athena Grand, 1008 E. State St. Tickets for the event are available online here.

The film will focus on the beginning of Ash and Pikachu’s adventure to celebrate The Pokemon Company’s 20th anniversary which took place in 2016.

Ohio University students will be able to see the beginning of Ash and Pikachu’s adventure as well as a look in their first encounter with Ho-Oh.

“So far we’ve sold just over 20 tickets but we anticipate that it will quickly go up closer to the showing,” Rick Frame, owner of Athena Grand, said in an email. “We anticipate being relatively busy for both showings.”

Ho-Oh’s loss of a rainbow wing and the lack of screentime for Brock and Misty diverges from the anime’s timeline to show an alternate story.

Some fans were upset to find out Brock and Misty were cut from the movie to be gym leaders rather than Ash’s companions throughout his adventure, but the new Ash seems to have similar encounters outside of that.

From the trailer’s reveal of Butterfree’s release and Ash’s adventures with Charmander, fans will have a deeper look into his adventure in this alternate Pokemon universe. It also shows Pokemon from areas other than Kanto, hinting at Ash’s adventures into different regions.

Along with the release of the movie, attending a showing of Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You will grant attendees access to a QR code for the upcoming Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon games that give players a Pikachu wearing the hat Ash wears in the movie. Also, a never-before-seen Pokemon card with the hat will be distributed among guests.

“The cards will be given out the night of the show to each customer who purchased a ticket,” Frame said in an email. “So as for reaction to the cards, we will see how that goes Nov. 5 and 6,” Frame said.
