After last week’s shocking revelation about Jack’s death on This Is Us last week, Tuesday’s episode took a step back from revealing the endgame and focused on the children. One storyline that moved forward involved Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson). The couple is trying to adopt a child, but Randall is having some reservations. The couple was able to work it out, reinforcing the fact they are the couple everyone envies. Here’s why Randall and Beth are the epitome of #RelationshipGoals:
1. They make each other better
Randall and Beth are not perfect on their own, but together they seem to make each other perfect. Randall is an idealist, and Beth is more of a realist. Beth has the ability to ground Randall, and Randall pushes Beth to see the possibilities in the world.
This was especially true when it came to the adoption process. Randall had this vision of a perfect adoption where they took in a baby and started from scratch. Beth, on the other hand, thought if they adopted a teenager, they would make a more lasting impact on the child’s life.
That balance in the relationship is extremely admirable and makes them a great team.
2. They deal with real issues
The struggles the couple faces makes them relatable to the viewers. Randall and Beth often face similar problems to real-life couples. Their marriage seems perfect, but the two hide secrets from each other.
In season one, Beth hid the fact Randall’s dad knew who adopted him. That could have drove a wedge between the couple, but they talked it out and were able to overcome it.
In such a dramatic show, it can be hard to fully relate to the character and their situations because are exaggerated. But somehow Beth and Randall seem to highlight the strengths in marriage and shed light on conflicts couples face.
3. They have a cute banter
The couple has always been good at open communication. Even when times are hard, they still find a way to make each other laugh.
While filling out the application to foster a child, one of the questions was “Are you sexually satisfied by your partner?” A curious Randall asked Beth what she put.
“I put ‘Generally yes until I want a quickie and my husband is taking too long because he wants romance,’” she said.
It’s refreshing to see a TV couple that loves each other so much and be able to poke fun at one another.
4. They are nothing like Jack and Rebecca
This Is Us often compares every couple in the show to Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore)’s marriage. Because Randall and Beth are the only other married couple in the show, they are often the center of the comparison.
Jack and Rebecca had many problems in their relationship. Rebecca expects Jack to be perfect 100 percent of the time, which is hypocritical. Rebecca claims to be a great mother and handle all of the work around the house. She undermines Jack, and he deserved better.
That is not the case with Randall and Beth. The two compromise and know each other so well that they know what to expect from each other. Even though they do not expect perfection, somehow they achieve it.
