Today honors Leif Erikson, a Nordic explorer who some believe was the first to step foot in the New World while accidentally going off course on a trip to Greenland.
The holiday doesn't get much recognition because of competition with Columbus Day, which is a federal holiday. In recent years, the holiday has been considered controversial because of the way Columbus and his settlers treated Native Americans, according to National Geographic.
