TV Review: One character’s fate hangs in the balance on ‘How To Get Away With Murder’

In the penultimate episode of How to Get Away with Murder’s fourth season, more details emerged about Wes’ death. The Keating Four also discovered some hard truths about one another and said goodbye to other characters. Here are the top five moments from the latest episode of How to Get Away with Murder:

Simon agreed to help the Keating Four

In the last episode, Simon (Behzad Dabu) finally woke up from his coma, which put Annalise (Viola Davis) and the Keating Four on edge because they were afraid he would remember everything about the night he was shot. In this episode, Simon called and requested that Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) come and see him. The group was paranoid he remembered something, but when Oliver visited, Simon only remembered telling him he was gay. Although the Keating Four were temporarily reassured, they worried Simon would start remembering more about the night.

As the episode progressed, Simon did in fact remember more about the night. To try and control him, Oliver offered to help him by hiring Annalise, but Simon had already hired Tegan (Amirah Vann). To make matters even worse, Simon eventually remembered that Laurel (Karla Souza) was present the night of the incident, putting the Keating Four entirely on the defensive. In a last-ditch effort, Annalise offered Simon a pathway to get a visa. He could take the files that were on the missing hard drive and turn them in, making him a whistleblower and allowing him the opportunity to get a special visa. Simon reluctantly agreed to the deal and promptly fired Tegan, granting the Keating Four temporary safety.

Isaac says goodbye to Annalise

While going with Oliver to visit Simon in the hospital, Annalise discovered Isaac’s (Jimmy Smits) room. Annalise tried to blame herself for his overdose, however, Isaac refused to let her accept the blame. He said he was in the hospital because he wanted to die, he was proud of her and the difference between them is that Annalise always gets back up when something is thrown her way. Finally, Isaac said it was the last time they could see each other, effectively ending the complicated relationship they shared.

While Isaac served as a way for Annalise to recover, he offered powerful insight into details about herself and her life as an addict. The two had a very tumultuous relationship that often ended in one of them getting hurt, so it’s probably for the best they are finally separating. The scene also provided closure for the two, suggesting that they both have experienced some form of healing and recovery.

Asher discovers Michaela’s secret

In a very out-of-character move, Michaela (Aja Naomi King) cheated on Asher (Matt McGorry) in the special Scandal/How to Get Away with Murder crossover. Connor (Jack Falahee), Laurel and Oliver quickly realized she cheated, leaving Michaela uncertain about whether to tell Asher. In this episode, Connor encouraged Michaela to tell Asher the truth because he said it would be better to be a cheater rather than a cheater and a liar.

This all came crashing down when Asher was venting to Oliver and Connor. He expressed the problems he and Michaela had in their relationship and how frustrated he was with it. Connor and Oliver felt uncomfortable and Asher was easily able to piece together what had happened. It all culminated in Asher confronting Michaela just as she was about to confess to him. Asher told her he had had suspicions, but he thought he was wrong because she loved him. Michaela told him it was a mistake and Asher replied it wasn’t a mistake — it was stabbing him in his heart. It’s safe to say their relationship will be an important issue in the finale.

Bonnie is injured in some capacity

Earlier in the season, D.A. Denver and Laurel’s father agreed to keep a close eye on Bonnie (Liza Weil). After Bonnie began investigating into Denver even more to try and locate the hard drive, Denver ordered Laurel’s father to deal with her. Frank (Charlie Weber) got an alert on his phone that showed something wrong with Bonnie’s car, but was unable to figure out what it was. Bonnie then discovered Denver had the hard drive and was playing both sides. Before Annalise could talk with Bonnie further, she received a call from Nate (Billy Brown) who said there had been a car accident and the camera revealed Bonnie’s flipped car.

It was only a matter of time before there was another fatality in the series. But there is still a chance Bonnie will be OK. Either way, it will also play an important part in the finale as Bonnie’s fate lies in mystery.

Laurel’s mother played a part in Wes’s death

Laurel’s mother vehemently denied any involvement in Wes’ (Alfred Enoch) death. She had met with him and offered him $100,000 to stay away from Laurel, but swore she didn’t order his death, however, Laurel took matters into her own hands and met with Denver. She offered him the phone that had evidence of his involvement with Dominick’s disappearance in exchange for her mother’s phone records. Denver agreed and Laurel found her mother had called Wes 10 minutes after he left the voicemail for Dominick. In a flashback, it was revealed Wes told her he was going to the police. Laurel’s mother then called Laurel’s father and told him to deal with Wes.

Now that Laurel knows her mother was involved in some capacity in Wes’ murder, it will certainly cause tensions to heighten the finale. Laurel still has not gotten her baby back, and there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the exact details of Wes’ murder. Now that Asher and Michaela are fighting and Bonnie’s fate is unknown, viewers will be treated to a lot of drama and revelations in the finale.

How To Get Away With Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
