TV Review: Annalise Keating and Olivia Pope finally collaborated on 'How to Get Away with Murder'

In the special crossover episode of How to Get Away with Murder, Annalise travelled to the most powerful court in the country—The Supreme Court. Armed with a powerful, familiar friend, Annalise took on her biggest case yet. The episode proved to be a fun crossover and laid the groundwork for the rest of the season as it comes to a close. Here are the top five moments from episode 13 of How to Get Away with Murder’s fourth season.

1. Annalise teamed up with Olivia Pope

As the special crossover event, Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) finally crossed paths with Scandal’s Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). In a two-hour event, Annalise met with Olivia and urged her to pressure the president into putting Annalise’s case before the Supreme Court. After first clashing, the two finally combined their efforts and got the case before the Court. Then, in the second hour, Annalise argued her case in front of the justices, resulting in one of her fiercest and most-important court battles yet.

The teamwork between the two characters left audiences exhilarated and overjoyed as they saw the strong women finally work together. The dialogue that they shared exemplified their powerful characters and really did justice to both Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. With this being Scandal’s last season, it was a much-needed, and desired, crossover.

2. Frank found proof that Laurel’s mother conspired against Wes

When Frank (Charlie Weber) confronted Laurel’s mother about her meeting with Wes (Alfred Enoch), she was caught off-guard and admitted to paying Wes off. She claimed to have offered him $100,000 to stay away from Laurel (Karla Souza). Frank quickly told Bonnie (Liza Weil) this and urged her to look into Wes’ bank accounts. Unfortunately, Bonnie found no money in his account, but Frank did find a flash drive in Wes’ apartment. Frank then played Laurel the audio on the flash drive, revealing that Wes was going to tell Laurel about their meeting.

Now that Laurel’s mom is seemingly involved in Wes’ murder, audiences will be left guessing as to who really killed Wes and what their motive for doing it was.

3. Isaac’s wife confronted Annalise

After Isaac (Jimmy Smits) confessed to Annalise that he had lied about his involvement with his daughter’s suicide, Annalise called his wife and told her to confront Isaac about what happened. In this episode, his wife repeatedly called Annalise until she answered. When she finally did, his wife told Annalise that Isaac overdosed. He wasn’t dead, but his kidneys were failing, leaving Annalise rattled before her big case.

Isaac’s wife blamed Annalise for making him overdose. Annalise stated that she wanted her to know what really happened with her daughter. However, Isaac’s wife said that she already had known and told Annalise that she ruined him just like she ruins everyone in her life.

4. Annalise battles the Supreme Court

In her biggest case yet, Annalise faced off at the Supreme Court to argue for individuals who were incarcerated because of public defenders being overworked. Her class action suit argued that public defenders are bogged down by their immense workload, resulting in under-privileged individuals being unfairly represented and thrown into the prison system.

She seems to be successful until Michaela (Aja Naomi King) and Olivia realize that one of the justices is cooperating with the opposing side because of his conservative beliefs. When Annalise gives her first argument, the justice tells her to decide what she is arguing, racism or failure of the public defender system. Annalise replied, saying that the case concerned racism in a new era of Jim Crowe. The justice said that Annalise failed to file the case as a matter of discrimination and thus, the Supreme Court couldn’t hear the case. Fortunately, with the help of Michaela, Annalise found an earlier ruling by the justice that stated race is always a variable in cases and allowed Annalise to continue.

In her final speech, Annalise delivered a powerful speech on racism in America, saying, “Racism built into the DNA of America. As long as we turn a blind eye to the pain of those suffering under its oppression, we will never escape those origins.”

5. Simon woke up

Ever since he was shot in the mid-season finale, Simon (Behzad Dabu) has been in a coma. This has worked out well for the Keating 4 because if he wakes up, he’ll likely tell the police everything that happened that night. At the end of the episode, Bonnie called Annalise and said that she was at the hospital. Worried, Annalise asked if Isaac had died, but Bonnie told her that Simon had woken up.

With Simon now awake, Annalise and the Keating 4 are surely in for a lot more drama. In the final two episodes of the season, there will likely be many more bombshells dropped and the mystery surround Wes’ death will finally be cleared.
