TV Review: The ‘Supernatural’ team escapes from the apocalypse world in ‘Exodus’

In Supernatural’s May 10 episode, “Exodus,” the team made plans to escape the apocalypse world.

This week’s episode picked up where last week left off: Sam (Jared Padalecki) hugged Mary (Samantha Smith) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), reminding the audience just how close the family was. Sam informed everyone that Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) brought him back from the dead in exchange for a relationship with his son, Jack (Alexander Calvert). Dean wanted to kill Lucifer, but Lucifer reminded them that, with his stash of grace, they had 31 hours until the rift closed.

The brothers talked to Mary about going home but realized she didn’t want to go — she wanted to stay and help fight the war. Sam reasoned with her with plan B: They take everyone important to her, a total of 25 people, with them through the rift. That way, when everyone is through the rift, they can regroup.

The plan was put on the back burner when Jack talked to Lucifer, wanting to hear his dad out. Jack asked why everyone hates Lucifer. Lucifer responded that he loved God too much that God kicked him out of heaven; humans are hardwired to sin, so Lucifer received the blame for their mistakes. Cas (Misha Collins) tried to do some damage control by informing Jack that Lucifer was lying, and humans are good.

Back at base camp, apocalypse Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) informed the team that Ketch (‎David Haydn-Jones) and Charlie (Felicia Day) went on a mission to save a human from angels. But Ketch and Charlie were captured and tortured for information by angels, including one named Castiel — the dark-side version of the real Cas. The team rescued Ketch and Charlie just in time and to top it off, real Cas stuck a blade into apocalypse Cas.

With two hours left until the rift closes, the team made their way through the woods and filed into the real world. Ketch was the first one to go through and was met with Rowena (Ruth Connell), keeping the rift open, on the other side.

Before Sam and Dean made it through the rift, Michael showed up and fought Lucifer and Gabriel (Richard Speight Jr.). Gabriel told the boys to leave and took on Lucifer and Michael, only to be killed by Michael — a sacrificial suicide for the boys. Dean walked through the rift and Sam was about to when he stopped Lucifer from making it through. He pushed Lucifer down and said, "How’d you think this would go?” making it through the rift just in time.

At the bunker, it’s a celebration with good people and good beer. Bobby gave a speech about brothers in arms and welcomed Sam and Dean to the family.

The episode was a breath of fresh air. The entire season was preparing Sam and Dean to rescue Jack and Mary from the apocalypse world. They were finally able to with only seconds to spare.

Though Gabriel’s death was sudden, it was coming and made sense. It wasn’t the first time the writers brought back a fan favorite to kill off. Case in point: Missouri’s death. Also, his death spoke volumes of his character arc. Gabriel entered season 13 selfish with a revenge kill mission but died protecting the brothers.

Overall, the episode was good — the finale of rescuing Jack and Mary was a breath of relief. But, it wasn’t without its unanswered questions. New week’s episode is the season finale, which could go a multitude of ways. Based on the promo, Lucifer and Michael somehow make their way to the real world and Michael wants to take over. This could mean a very psychical world war, like the apocalypse starting up again. Also, in the short time that Lucifer talked with Jack, Jack bought into Lucifer’s story, which included slight brainwashing. That could mean that Jack might use his powers for evil.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
