No women appeared on Forbes’ highest-paid athletes list

Forbes released its annual ranking of the world’s 100 highest-paid athletes and women did not appear on the list this year for the first time in eight years.

The Forbes’ lists of highest-paid athletes have always been dominated by male athletes, according to Forbes, but at least one female always appeared on the list.

Last year, tennis player Serena Williams was the only female on the list, coming in at 51st with an annual salary of $27 million. This year, Williams has been off the court because of pregnancy and maternity leave. She earned $18 million from sponsors but it was not enough to make the 2018 top 100 list, according to CNN.

The list factors in salaries, bonuses and prize cash earned between June 1, 2017 and June 1 of this year, according to Moneyish.

Retired boxer Floyd Mayweather appeared on the list again as the world’s highest-paid athlete for the fourth time in seven years, according to Forbes. His annual salary is $285 million.

Many sports tournaments now pay men and women equal prize money. This years list shows that a disparity is still present.
