City Council: Members to discuss the Stewart MacDonald building and construction of Richland Avenue Bridge

Athens City Council members will meet Monday to discuss whether or not the Stewart MacDonald Building obtains a historical designation, the purchase of “Smart Meters” and construction on Richland Avenue Bridge and the Northwest Bikeway Spur.

The city wants to preserve the Stewart MacDonald building, located at 21 North Shafer Street, as a local historic designation. The building is significant to the growth and development of the City of Athens, according to an ordinance brought forward by Councilwoman Chris Fahl, D-4th Ward. The owners are committed to retaining existing businesses in the City.

Council members will also continue to discuss authorizing construction for the Richland bridge over Coates run. The existing bridge is located near 362 Richland Avenue and is rated at 65 percent of Ohio Legal Roads. The new bridge will help rehabilitate the existing structure to meet load standards.

Construction is estimated to cost $958,069 and is set to start in May 2019 and be complete in August.

Members will also discuss construction on the Northwest Bikeway Spur and the plans for purchasing smart parking meters.

City Council will meet Monday at 7:00 p.m. on the third floor of the City Building.
