New Music Friday: Hozier is finally back with a new EP; Radiohead’s Thom Yorke gives a taste of his ‘Suspiria’ score

The weekend is here and you all know what that means: new music. This week has been filled with some new albums from seasoned artists, as well as new singles from artists on the rise. And as fall movies hit the big screen, their soundtracks follow accordingly. Here are some key additions to the music world released in the past couple of days:

The new music that’s been long-awaited:

Fans have been expecting new music from Hozier ever since he released his self-titled album, Hozier, in 2014. The debut album had both critical and fan appraise, yet the singer-songwriter hadn’t released any new music (except a song for The Legend of Tarzan soundtrack) since then. Until now, that is.

His latest release, Nina Cried Power, showcases just why the artist is so renowned, while also showing experimentation in his sound. The title track “Nina Cried Power” features soul-music legend Mavis Staples and examines protest songs.

In mentioning artists such as Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye and John Lennon, Hozier is seemingly suggesting something. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he explained how these artists fought for equality, and that’s a cause that should be fought for now more than ever.

The legendary artist who’s still churning out albums:

Music icon Paul McCartney has continually made music for decades. His latest release, Egypt Station, shows off McCartney’s signature flair and style in a modernized way.

The songs are, to no surprise, well-written and even a bit flirtatious. His first single from the album, “Come On To Me,” has McCartney’s memorable high-notes and rock ’n’ roll style that could be dated back to his days with The Beatles.

McCartney has shown with this album that even at 76 years old, he can still make a great rock song. He balances fun songs with serious ones, upbeat songs with slower one, and overall he created another great album to add to his discography.

The one that’ll give you chills:

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke is no stranger to providing haunting vocals for film scores and soundtracks. The singer’s latest film feature is scoring director Luca Guadagnino’s remake of the 1970s horror film Suspiria. Guadagnino is arguably most known for his 2017 film Call Me By Your Name

The sneak-peak song “Suspirium” Yorke released is a piano-driven, slow tune that’s as ominous as the Suspiria trailer. Yorke is at his best with “Suspirium.” The song has very little production, a repeating piano backing and, overall, a creepy vibe to it. It’s certain to give listeners chills.

The staple love song:

Danish pop band Lukas Graham was constantly played on the radio with its debut, self-titled album. Between singles such as “7 Years” and “You’re Not There,” the band became modestly well known in Top 40s Pop.

Their newest release, “Love Someone,” is a laid-back love song. Dedicated to frontman Lukas Forchhammer’s significant other, as seen on the album art, the song strikes a chord. It’s sentimental, feel-good and will make any listener aspire to have that type of love.
