TV Review: Michaela won the first case of season five on 'How To Get Away With Murder'

In How to Get Away with Murder’s second episode of the fifth season, the group was challenged to face its first appeals case as a result of Annalise’s Supreme Court victory. Also, a few characters went rogue and seemed to behave in mysterious ways to dig deeper into the past. Here are the top five moments from Thursday’s episode:

Michaela won the first appeals case

After Annalise (Viola Davis)’s monumental victory at Supreme Court, all 91 individuals named in the class-action suit can appeal their case. The first case Annalise chose involved a woman from Myanmar who was charged with murdering her wife. Annalise had her students each present the best way to handle the case and Michaela (Aja Naomi King) won over Annalise.

During the trial, it was revealed the woman only married her partner for a green card. However, Michaela was fierce when confronting the witnesses and found success in the woman’s stepchildren. Using Oliver (Conrad Ricamora)’s hacking skills, they were able to find racist comments left online by the woman’s stepson. Annalise decided to confront him on the stand. He quickly became enraged, spewing hateful comments toward both Annalise and the woman. In the end, the woman was cleared and her green card was reinstated, while her stepson was charged with first degree murder. That marked the first win of the season, and it will be interesting to follow as more of the individuals named in the class action suit appeal their cases.

Bonnie might have kidnapped her son

Nate (Billy Brown) continued to investigate what happened to Bonnie’s child. The data was found to have come from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. When he moved deeper into the case, he found out the boy was kidnapped from the hospital. The only piece of evidence for the case was a picture of woman carrying the baby out of the hospital who appeared to be Bonnie (Liza Weil). As the season progresses, viewers will likely learn more about what happened to Bonnie’s baby and why she seems to be so transfixed on Laurel (Karla Souza)’s baby in the flash-forward.

Frank started to spy on Gabriel

In the last episode, Frank (Charlie Weber) was interested in finding out more about Gabriel (Rome Flynn)’s past. In the episode, Frank took the motive even further when he slept with Gabriel’s roommate. Frank told her he would pay her if she convinced Gabriel to move out, and she agreed. Frank then told Gabriel about Rebecca’s old apartment, which was also Wes’ for a time. Gabriel moved in and is now neighbors with Asher (Matt McGorry), creating a dynamic and friendship between the two that will develop as the season progresses. Toward the end of the episode, Frank was watching Gabriel on a camera he secretly installed into the apartment. His reasoning remains unclear, but he is determined to learn more about the boy’s past.

Laurel covered for Tegan

Last season, Tegan (Amirah Vann) anonymously named Laurel’s father to get him arrested. Her company, Caplan & Gold, obviously didn’t know she was the one that helped take down its partner. In the episode, Laurel told the boss at Caplan & Gold her mother was the one who named her father and the company could stop investigating it themselves. That proved to be a favor for Tegan, who then helped get Laurel’s baby into the daycare at the company. Although it seemed to pay off for Laurel, there likely will be more to their relationship as they grow closer to each other.

Michaela confronted Bonnie in the flash-forward

The episode opened with Bonnie carrying Laurel’s baby from outside to the restroom inside the wedding reception. At the end of the episode, Bonnie assured herself, and the baby, he would be OK. Michaela walked in and ominously asked if she had heard from Nate. Then, Laurel walked in panicked, but was calmed when she saw her baby and quickly took him back into the reception. Bonnie asked Michaela what she meant about hearing from Nate, but Michaela noticed the blood on her foot and repeatedly demanded Bonnie to tell her whose blood was on her.

With the fate of the person lying in the show, unknown, the group will be scrambling to figure out what exactly transpired the night of the wedding. A central theme in this season seems to be Bonnie and the relationship she has with her son and Laurel’s son. Perhaps she is trying to save him to make up for what happened to her son? No matter what happens, audiences will keep checking in to see what chaos unfolds as the season continues.

How To Get Away With Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
