TV Review: The fate of another character is unclear after the latest 'How to Get Away with Murder' episode

The mystery of Bonnie’s son has been one of How to Get Away with Murder’s biggest plotlines this season and Thursday’s episode offered even more to the mystery. In fact, a large portion of the episode centered around that mystery. Here are the top takeaways from the episode:

Annalise made progress on Nate’s father’s case

Following her Supreme Court victory, Annalise (Viola Davis) has been working to help the incarcerated individuals named in the civil suit. Nate’s (Billy Brown) father has been an important case because it is so personal to the group. Connor (Jack Falahee) was intent on moving the case forward and Annalise was able to meet with him to discuss his options.

The group decided to work around the idea of insanity and Annalise urged him to say he asked for cake after the murder occurred. This evidence would be able to help further the idea that he was insane and move his case forward. After much deliberation and mulling it over, Nate’s father decided to go along with it and pretend he asked for cake to help with his case. His case was approved to move forward, but the fact he hesitated to go with it will undoubtedly have consequences in the future.

Annalise told Bonnie about Nate’s investigating

Nate has been determined to figure out what happened to Bonnie’s (Liza Weil) child all season. When he confronted Annalise about it, Annalise angrily discouraged him from pursuing it any further, saying Bonnie’s sister was trash and that Bonnie didn’t deserve that. However, Nate was able to convince her that it was worthwhile by explaining how he felt about his dad. Annalise finally told Bonnie that he was investigating her and her son.

Bonnie completely broke down and Annalise comforted her, encouraging her about the entire situation. As the season progresses, the identity of Bonnie’s son will become more and more pressing. Is it Gabriel (Rome Flynn), who was arrested for beating up a doctor that over-prescribed medication to his mother? Or is that a red herring? Either way, it likely will tie into the flash-forward mystery that seems to be centered around Bonnie and her motives.

Bonnie made even more suspicious choices in the flash-forward

Last week, it was revealed that Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) was missing. This week, the characters still scrambled to find Oliver so Michaela (Aja Naomi King) offered to call him, but, for whatever reason, called Nate. Bonnie was shown to have Nate’s phone and declined the call. Michaela left Nate a voicemail and said she hadn’t seen him for a while and was wondering where he was. In the last scene, Annalise collapsed in tears and screams as the show cut to black.

Each week, there only seem to be more questions arising from the flash-forward. Why does Bonnie have Nate’s phone? Is that Bonnie or is it her sister we’re seeing? Where are Nate and Oliver? With so many questions looming over Connor and Oliver’s wedding, it will be fascinating to see how the night unfolds and what the fate of each character is.

How To Get Away With Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
