TV Review: Oliver goes missing as the mystery of the flash-forward evolves on 'How To Get Away With Murder'

In Thursday’s episode of How to Get Away with Murder, the show continued to expand its storyline as the characters became entangled in even more of a mess. The fate of one character became uncertain as the motives of another grew murkier. Here are the top five moments from the episode:

Annalise lost a case for Caplan & Gold

Annalise (Viola Davis) has been extremely successful in the courtroom lately, however, in this episode, she failed to win the jury over. The case revolved around a “psychopath” who killed a man. When digging deeper, Annalise found that the man who was killed had been having an affair with the wife of the man on trial. Once confronted, the man explained that his wife killed him out of rage after he threatened to leave her husband’s company. To protect her, the man pleaded guilty and took the blame. In the end, despite multiple efforts by Annalise, the man was found guilty and Annalise lost her first case of the season.

While it is still a loss, the case will have profound effects. Annalise will likely be more adamant and even more fierce in the other court cases. Also, the bosses at Caplan & Gold will be much more likely to listen to Annalise in the future and help her win.

The students took an ethics exam

To detract Annalise and her students, the governor required the students to first pass an ethics exam in front of a panel before they could help Annalise with her civil suit cases. Connor (Jack Falahee), Michaela (Aja Naomi King), Laurel (Karla Souza) and Gabriel (Rome Flynn) all studied extensively for the exam and excelled in front of the panel. In the end, they all passed, but the test was a great example of how politics can be dirty and unlawful in the real world. Politicians often pass bills or laws discouraging certain practices, and sometimes, it is unethical. The show tackling this issue only further enhances its social commentaries that it is so good at.

Frank continued to track Gabriel

In the last episode, Frank (Charlie Weber) installed cameras into Gabriel’s apartment. In Thursday’s episode, Frank only continued to investigate Gabriel’s life by having a keylogger installed onto his computer. Now, Frank will be able to watch everything Gabriel does, see who he calls and view everything he types on his computer. His motive is still unknown, but it will likely tie into a much bigger mystery for the season.

Bonnie apparently has a sister

After Nate (Billy Brown) discovered a photo of Bonnie (Liza Weil) leaving the hospital with her baby, he believed she had kidnapped her own child from the hospital. To recruit help, he went to Annalise and produced the file containing the image and DNA report. Annalise glanced at the photo and immediately knew that it wasn’t Bonnie, but it was actually her sister. This only further complicates the enormous amount of questions surrounding Bonnie and the fate of her child with a classic twin twist. Here’s to hoping How to Get Away with Murder can pull it off without seeming too ridiculous.

Oliver was missing from his wedding

In the flash-forward, Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) and Connor were called to the center of the floor. The camera panned to badly bruised Connor, who obviously had been in a fight recently. Oliver seemed to be missing as the DJ continually called for him, which again adds more drama to yet another mystery in the show.

As the season progresses, viewers will be highly anticipate the reveal of where Oliver is, how Connor got beaten up and how it all plays into the larger mystery in the flash-forward. How to Get Away with Murder has been able to produce an engaging show in the first three episodes, it’s just a question of whether they can keep it up as the season plows ahead.

How To Get Away With Murder airs Thursday at 10 p.m. on ABC
