TV Review: Tensions continue to rise as Maggie and Rick implement contrasting ideologies on 'The Walking Dead'

This season, The Walking Dead has been desperately trying to rebuild its society after the war. However, that has proven to be much more difficult than first anticipated. The Hilltop, The Saviors and Alexandria have merged together, but the tension between them has only increased.

Tensions rose higher when a Savior was found dead. The Saviors quickly blamed others, and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) scrambled to figure out who had killed the Savior. Not only that, but other individuals were going missing completely, creating another mystery for the communities.

When Anne, aka Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), went off on her own, Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) decided to follow and discovered it was her who had been trafficking people. She reported to an unknown group via walkie-talkie. The group requested she bring them either an “A” or a “B,” referring to the type of individual. At the end of the scene, Anne asked Gabriel to go with her, but he refused and she subsequently knocked him out, calling him a “B.” Perhaps this could mean an alpha or a beta and represent The Whisperers, who make an appearance in the comic books.

Rick and Carol (Melissa McBride) were ambushed by one of the Saviors, Judd, who attempted to hold Carol hostage in exchange for weapons. Carol was able to quickly disarm him with a hidden knife. As Rick encouraged Judd to get his wounds looked at, Carol said through gritted teeth, “Every life matters,” meaning Rick’s new policy may not be the best idea.

In contrast, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) ended up stumbling upon the girls of Oceanside, who were about to kill another Savior who had murdered a sibling of one of the girls. They had been inspired by Maggie killing Gregory and wanted revenge of their own. Maggie decided to turn a blind eye and walked away as the girls murdered the Savior.

At the end of the episode, Maggie told Daryl that Rick had his way, but it’s time to meet Negan. As the season continues, it seems Maggie and Rick will be spearheading the clashing campaigns and fighting for control over an already tumultuous society.
