TV Review: The winter premiere of ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ explored the mysteries of the past

In How to Get Away with Murder’s return, the show explored the background of Annalise (Viola Davis) and Gabriel (Rome Flynn) while the others struggled with what to do next.

The episode opened with the Keating Four realizing that Gabriel was Sam’s (Tom Verica) son. Meanwhile, Bonnie (Liza Weil) and Frank (Charlie Weber) frantically planned what to do next to cover up that Nate (Billy Brown) had killed the district attorney.

The main focus of the episode, however, was on Annalise and Sam. The episode showcased the tumultuous relationship the couple shared following the death of their unborn child. It was revealed that Annalise wanted to adopt Wes (Alfred Enoch) immediately after the death of their child, but Sam refused.

Instead, Sam tried to repair relations with his previous wife, Gabriel’s mother, and reconnect with the two of them. While doing so, Annalise began to have memory lapses and repeatedly forgot that she had lost the baby, resulting in a suicide attempt. Bonnie was able to help Annalise recover, but the episode ended with Sam sending a letter to Gabriel’s mom, stating he loved her and wanted her back. As the episode ended, Annalise’s long-time friend Eve (Famke Janssen) showed up and handed the letter to Annalise.

How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
