Big Mamma’s Burritos gets new owners, looks to add beer carryout

Big Mamma’s Burritos was recently bought by two executives from another of Athens’ favorite late-night restaurants: D.P. Dough.

Matt Crumpton, whose family owns the Athens D.P. Dough location, and Jerry DePizzo, former director of growth for D.P. Dough, bought Big Mamma’s on Feb. 5. Crumpton is also the CEO and president of D.P. Dough’s franchising, though he is transitioning out of those roles as ownership of the company changes hands.

The partners were at Big Mamma’s, 10 S. Court St., late night during Ohio University’s Sibs Weekend and were impressed with the culture of the store.

“Right now, we are just trying to get our feet underneath us right now,” DePizzo said. “(We are) getting familiar with the business and the people working for us and working with us.”

There have not been any other changes talked about yet. DePizzo and Crumption are trying to figure out what is working and what needs to be changed, all while making it an enjoyable place to work.

“Our main goal is to make more delicious food and create a better atmosphere while (employees) are in store or on delivery,” DePizzo said.

DePizzo said there will also be a transition to a carryout model for beer. Traditionally, Big Mamma’s has been focused on craft beers, but DePizzo and Crumpton want to add snacks, tobacco, soda and energy drinks.
