Posties make predictions for the 91st Academy Awards

The 91st Academy Awards will happen Sunday, so it’s time to take one last look at the biggest categories. Only one film will take home the top award of Best Picture, but it’s a close race. It’s film’s biggest night, and we are ready to see who will win the statues. Here are our predictions for the Oscars’ most well-known categories:

Best Picture

BlacKkKlansman

Black Panther

Bohemian Rhapsody

The Favourite

Green Book

Roma

A Star Is Born

Vice

Who should win

Georgia Davis: A Star Is Born, hands down. It was the best movie of 2018, and I will die on this hill.

Molly Schramm: I second Georgia on this. There’s not a single flaw in A Star Is Born.

Alexis Eichelberger: I loved A Star Is Born as much as anyone, but I also think Roma deserves a lot of credit. It’s definitely an outlier and broke a lot of conventions artistically.

Jonny Palermo: BlacKkKlansman was topical, impassioned and hysterically funny. Not only is it my favorite movie of 2018, but it’s my favorite Best Picture nominee since Whiplash

Who will win

Georgia: It’s between The Favourite and Roma. Roma has been winning a lot of the best film awards, but the Academy is known for upsetting this category. *cough The Shape of Water cough*

Molly: My money’s on The Favourite but I wouldn’t be surprised if something like Black Panther came out of left field and took the statue home. It did win big at the SAG Awards after all.

Alexis: The Favourite. It was fantastic by all accounts, and the Academy likes period dramas.

Jonny: Roma. The Academy loves picking dark horses to win Best Picture.

Best Director

Alfonso Cuarón (Roma)

Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite)

Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman)

Adam McKay (Vice)

Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War)

Who should win

Georgia: Alfonso Cuarón because anyone who directs, handles the cinematography and also edits the film should win.

Molly: Roma is a masterpiece and Alfonso Cuarón deserves it hands down — but Spike Lee would also be cool because his nomination is a long time coming.

Alexis: Cuarón! Roma was so stunning and intimate. And he deserves all the credit for making that film what it is.

Jonny: As much as I’d like to say Spike Lee, Cuarón deserves it here. Alexis picked the perfect word to describe the film — stunning.

Who will win

Georgia: Cuarón because everyone acknowledges that anyone who directs, handles the cinematography and also edits the film should win.

Molly: Once again, Cuarón.

Alexis: What they said.

Jonny: Cuarón. This will be the sixth time in seven years a person of color will win Best Director.

Best Actress

Yalitza Aparicio (Roma)

Glenn Close (The Wife)

Olivia Colman (The Favourite)

Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born)

Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)

Who should win

Georgia: Remember that hill I will die on? Yeah, it applies to Lady Gaga.

Molly: I guess I’m joining Georgia’s hill?

Alexis: I’ll join the party on the hill. That kind of performance in her first feature film? Unreal.

Jonny: Olivia Colman was absolutely dreadful in The Favourite, and I mean that in the best way. I’d also like to see Gaga win, though, just because she’s Gaga.

Who will win

Georgia: Olivia Colman. She picked up a key win in the category at the BAFTAs, so she is gaining ground at a key point in the race. It also helps The Favourite is winning a lot of awards right now.

Molly: I agree with Georgia. Colman’s got the heat at the moment, but I wouldn’t count Glenn Close out just yet.

Alexis: I’ll go with Glenn Close. She got the Globe and SAG.

Jonny: This seems like a two horse race between Colman and Close. I think Close will take it.

Best Actor

Christian Bale (Vice)

Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born)

Willem Dafoe (At Eternity's Gate)

Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody)

Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)

Who should win

Georgia: OK, hear me out. Christian Bale actually deserves to win this and not just because he underwent a huge transformation. Like, he killed playing Dick Cheney, and also he’s BRITISH and it does not show in any of his roles. The speaking alone should win him the award.

Molly: First off, Bradley Cooper should’ve been in the Best Director category. Nonetheless, I’d love for him to get recognition, but I’m not sure it’ll happen.

Alexis: I want Rami Malek. For all of Bohemian Rhapsody’s shortcomings, he knocked it out of the park.

Jonny: I wasn’t a huge fan of Vice, but Christian Bale embraced the power-hungry soulless temperament of Dick Cheney with splendor. Also, where is John David Washington?

Who will win

Georgia: The BAFTAs didn’t celebrate one of its own in Christian Bale. Instead, Rami Malek won. I don’t think this will help Rami defeat Christian, though.

Molly: The Academy loves a method actor and Christian Bale is the definition of one.

Alexis: I agree with Molly’s sentiment. The Academy loves dudes who don’t look like themselves.

Jonny: Rami Malek will win. Get ready for the most boring acceptance speech in Oscar history.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Amy Adams (Vice)

Marina de Tavira (Roma)

Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)

Emma Stone (The Favourite)

Rachel Weisz (The Favourite)

Who should win

Georgia: AMY ADAMS DESERVES AN OSCAR.

Molly: As much as Amy deserves one, so does Emma Stone for her amazing performance in The Favourite

Alexis: I LOVED Emma Stone in The Favourite. So dynamic. So funny. Hit herself in the face with that book with such conviction. Give her the statue.

Jonny: Uhh... I guess I’ll go with Amy Adams because she’s been nominated a gazillion times.

Who will win

Georgia: Rachel Weisz. Everyone is talking about Regina King’s performance in If Beale Street Could Talk, but Weisz has popped up in a lot of conversations. She has climbed in popularity, and it will help her win. Also, she’s just amazing.

Molly: One of the two ladies from The Favourite. They were too good not to give them an award.

Alexis: Regina King. Beale Street arguably got jipped in other categories. They’ll give ‘em this one.

Jonny: Regina King is a heavy favorite according to the Vegas bookies. Never bet against the bookies.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Mahershala Ali (Green Book)

Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman)

Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born)

Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)

Sam Rockwell (Vice)

Who should win

Georgia: Sam Elliott because he deserves everything in the world.

Molly: Adam Driver is so diverse, and I don’t think he gets enough recognition for that.

Alexis: Can I say Timothée Chalamet for Beautiful Boy? (I’m not bitter or anything.)

Jonny: Although Sam Rockwell was a damn good Dubyah, Adam Driver deserves to win for his ingenious performance in BlackKklansman.

Who will win

Georgia: Mahershala Ali. He has been winning everything, and there is really no competition.

Molly: Sam Rockwell seemingly comes out of left field a lot, but like Georgia said, Mahershala Ali is winning literally everything.

Alexis: *sigh* Mahershala Ali, I suppose.

Jonny: I’d be shocked if anyone but Ali won here.

Best Adapted Screenplay

A Star Is Born (Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters and Eric Roth)

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen)

BlacKkKlansman (Spike Lee, David Rabinowitz, Charlie Wachtel and Kevin Willmott)

If Beale Street Could Talk (Barry Jenkins)

Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty)

Who should win

Georgia: A Star Is Born has to win something.

Molly: GIVE A STAR IS BORN THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES.

Alexis: A Star Is Born has this one.

Jonny: GIVE BLACKKKLANSMAN THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES.

Who will win

Georgia: A Star Is Born.

Molly: I could see the Coen Brothers winning on their name alone. Sad.

Alexis: A Star Is Born. I hope Bradley Cooper gets emotional during his acceptance speech.

Jonny: This will be the only award that BlacKkKlansman wins.

Best Original Screenplay

The Favourite (Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara)

First Reformed (Paul Schrader)

Green Book (Brian Hayes Currie, Peter Farrelly and Nick Vallelonga)

Roma (Alfonso Cuarón)

Vice (Adam McKay)

Who should win

Georgia: Everything in The Favourite was fantastic, especially the dialogue.

Molly: The humor in The Favourite is, well, my favorite.

Alexis: Our favorite, The Favourite.

Jonny: Sure, why not? Let’s go with The Favourite.

Who will win

Georgia: The Favourite.

Molly: The Favourite.

Alexis: Is there an echo in here?

Jonny: Yes.

Best Animated Feature

Incredibles 2

Isle of Dogs

Mirai

Ralph Breaks the Internet

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Who should win

Georgia: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It was a beautiful film, and there is no competition.

Molly: I adored Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs but I think it’s a bit dated, and forgotten for the awards season.

Alexis: I am a Spider-Verse fanatic. Absolutely incredible and criminally underrated because it’s animated.

Jonny: SPIDER-MAN!

Who will win

Georgia: See above.

Molly: I guess I’m just piggybacking on Georgia now.

Alexis: Just cue that Post Malone song from the Spider-Verse soundtrack.

Jonny: SPIDER-MAN!

Best Visual Effects

Avengers: Infinity War

Christopher Robin

First Man

Ready Player One

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Who should win

Georgia: Infinity War or Thanos will snap us to dust.

Molly: Infinity War. Maybe the Oscar win will bring everyone back from the dead?

Alexis: Infinity War was visually overwhelming in the best way. (Also, I do not endorse the death jokes. Too soon.)

Jonny: I really want to see Thanos accept this award.

Who will win

Georgia: Idk, Ready Player One looked cool. But also Thanos.

Molly: People seem to love Star Wars, so why not?

Alexis: My Marvel kings are taking this one.

Jonny: Thanos will finally be able to add an Oscar to his collection

Best Cinematography

The Favourite (Robbie Ryan)

Never Look Away (Caleb Deschanel)

Roma (Alfonso Cuarón)

A Star Is Born (Matthew Libatique)

Cold War (Lukasz Zal)

Who should win

Georgia: The way the camera tells the story in A Star Is Born is so beautiful. It moves so much when they’re on stage, mimicking its excitement, but then it is stationary when it shows the characters’ normal lives. Love it.

Molly: I’m furthering Georgia’s thoughts. Go watch A Star Is Born, especially the concert scenes, and then go watch a live concert video. They are the exact same. Amazing.

Alexis: Roma was captivating because of its visuals as much as the plot. Even in such a competitive category, I think it stands out.

Jonny: One of the reasons Roma works is because of its sublime cinematography. Cuarón deserves it.

Who will win

Georgia: It’ll be Roma because everything in that film is breathtaking.

Molly: It’s been said that every scene in Roma could be its own picture, so I think this is pretty clear.

Alexis: Roma!

Jonny: Ditto everyone.

Best Original Song

“All the Stars” from Black Panther

“I'll Fight” from RBG

“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns

“Shallow” from A Star Is Born

“When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Who should win

Georgia: “Shallow.”

Molly: “Shallow” literally has Mark Ronson on it as a writing credit. He’s a god in the music industry.

Alexis: Lady Gaga really gave us a karaoke classic for the ages. Don’t let her down.

Jonny: C’mon. How can you not want Gaga to win?

Who will win

Georgia: I’m in the shallow shaaallloow.

Molly: MARK RONSON AND LADY GAGA, PEOPLE.

Alexis: *that yell thing Lady Gaga does in Shallow*

Jonny: Need I say more?
