TV Review: The subjects are on the right track but something bad is coming on ‘The Good Place’

Though The Good Place is early on in its last season, things are already getting exciting.

Last week’s episode ended with Eleanor (Kristen Bell) deciding to make Chidi (William Jackson Harper) the savior of humanity with his ethics lectures, and they would go through any means necessary to make Chidi realize it’s up to him to teach the lessons.

This week’s episode follows the hardship that is convincing the human experiment subjects to listen to Chidi’s philosophy class and become good people. Not only is it hard for them to listen, but Chidi is in a full state of relaxation because he doesn’t know yet that he’s not supposed to be there.

To combat this, Eleanor enlists Jason (Danny Jacinto) to reprise his season one role as a fake monk who isn’t truly supposed to be there, and in turn stress Chidi out to no end.

Chidi outright lies to cover for Jason, and feels so guilty about it that he can’t stand it anymore. He goes to Eleanor and Michael (Ted Danson) to tell them about Jason, but can’t go through it, and ends up telling Eleanor how he feels like he’s being punished.

This causes Eleanor to start sobbing, telling Chidi how she promised she’d take care of him but is failing. Michael covers for Eleanor and explains away the situation to Chidi, who then decides the only way to help himself and other people is by teaching Jason ethics. This puts the plan on the right track.

While Eleanor, Jason and Michael are focused on Chidi, Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Janet (D’Arcy Carden) are focused on John (Brandon Scott Jones). However, after trying to crack John, Tahani realizes she and John have more in common than she thought. After a nice heart to heart, they decide to bury the hatchet and become friends.

“Because I’m angry at him for leaving me,” Eleanor said. “Which isn’t even remotely fair because he sacrificed himself for us, but I’m still angry he abandoned me. Which makes me feel guilty, which makes me feel angry, which makes me want to talk to Chidi because he’s the person I go to when I’m angry. So it’s a real fun cycle.”

And though Eleanor usually goes to Chidi with these kinds of things, Michael is proving to make a great second choice. The two have had a lot of really touching heart-to-hearts this season, and we’re only on episode three.

The episode ends with Tahani making it her personal mission to help John, and Jason receiving a well-earned applause from his teammates for his work with Chidi. It seems like each of the four subjects are on the right track.

However, it wouldn’t be The Good Place if the episode didn’t end on a cliffhanger, and though there isn’t much context provided, it seems that something bad is headed right for Michael and Eleanor’s neighborhood, and it only spells trouble for the rest of the season.

This episode is especially difficult for Cheleanor shippers, because they have to watch as the couple is split apart, and Eleanor really lets her emotions go about Chidi. Audiences are desperately waiting for the moment the two get back together.
