TV Review: Brent has a change of heart, but it may be too late on ‘The Good Place’

It’s almost unbearable for audiences to wait for next week’s episode of The Good Place after the wild ride the show took this week.

Last week’s episode ended with Michael (Ted Danson) letting the bad place Janet (D’Arcy Carden) go free, and Simone (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) standing up to Brent (Benjamin Koldyke) after he writes a sexist book.

This week’s episode marks the last day of the experiment, and Eleanor (Kristen Bell) is rushing to get everything finalized.

Simone figures out that something fishy is going on with their group. She has spent the entirety of the experiment collecting data, so all of her motivations were selfish instead of pure. The whole group figures out that Jason (Manny Jacinto) isn’t actually the monk he’s pretending to be, and Simone’s suspicions are confirmed. She rightfully believes they’re being tested.

After realizing that Brent hasn’t made any real progress and the humans are onto them, the group suggests a “Hail Mary” of sorts. They create an “end of the first year in the good place” party and open up a hole of death, where Brent falls in. The other three subjects are left with the choice to save him or leave.

Chidi (William Jackson Harper), of course, wants to help save Brent. Simone and John (Brandon Scott Jones), however, want to leave as quickly as possible. Both of them leave, and Eleanor and Michael return to see Chidi has fallen into the pit as well.

Both Brent and Chidi are now hanging on for their lives, so Eleanor and Michael get them out. They’ve now officially lost all hope for Simone and John but decide that Chidi and Brent are their final hope.

Knowing Brent will never truly realize he is a bad person who needs to change. Eleanor and Michael decide to pull a trick from season one: tell Brent and Chidi they’re actually in the bad place.

Eleanor and Michael leave the room with only minutes left of the experiment to see what happens.

Chidi finally tells Brent that he’s a bad person and is honest with him. Brent finally sees the error of his ways and tries to apologize to Chidi.

“Look, Chidi, whatever happens next, I need to say this to you: I am so, so sor-” Brent said.

Right as he is about to finish his apology, the experiment ends, and the humans freeze.

The epic cliffhanger to see if Brent’s last-minute change of heart saved the experiment and humanity after all is driving audiences crazy.
