TV Review: Sam and Dean have a case of bad luck on ‘Supernatural’

Last week’s episode of Supernatural left things on an eerie note. With Sam (Jared Padalecki) getting a glimpse of the end, the future for the Winchesters is uncertain. During the latest episode, Garth Fitzgerald IV (DJ Qualls) helps Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles) while their luck runs out on Supernatural. Here’s a recap of the episode if you couldn’t watch:

Sam and Dean have normal people problems

This week opens up with the brothers’ luck running out. Dean’s credit card gets declined at the gas station, and he gets a parking ticket. At the bunker, Sam burns dinner and spills the pasta while burning his hand. Later in the episode, Baby dies, Sam gets sick, Dean has cavities and then Sam and Dean can’t pick a lock, which is like a Winchester rite of passage.

All these years when Chuck has been writing Sam and Dean’s lives, he waved the “normal people problems.” So for as long as the audience has known the boys, they’ve known the guns-blazing duo. Now, Chuck has downgraded the brothers to just average Joes.

Garth needs the brothers’ help

In the midst of the Sam and Dean’s struggles, Garth calls for help. Garth introduces Sam and Dean to his wife, Bess (Sarah Smyth), and his kids, Gertie (Emma Oliver), Castiel (William Brody) and Sam (Austin Brody). Yes, Garth named his sons after Sam and Cas. Sorry, Dean.

While Dean and Garth are talking, Dean winces, and Garth notices some tooth pain. Apparently, Dean has never been to the dentist, and now his tooth hurts. It just so happens that Garth is a dentist, so while Dean is unconscious and Garth fills his 17 cavities, Dean dreams that he and Garth perform a black and white tap dance number in the bunker. The dance number felt quirky and fun, but so did the episode.

Garth calls the boys because Bess’s werewolf cousin, Brad (Jesse Hutch), was badly beaten by an unknown monster, and Bess is nursing him back to health. Brad leads Sam and Dean to a monster fight club in Minnesota. What would typically be an easy hunt was anything but, with Dean suddenly becoming intolerant to dairy and in need of a bathroom, and Sam tripping over a bucket.

The fight club owner, Cutty (Danny Dworkis), places Dean and Sam in the cage to fight an alpha vampire, Maul (Daryl Ducharme). The boys try to pick the lock, but they can’t, thanks to Chuck. Thankfully, Garth followed them to the club, breaks the boys out and detonates C4 that he strategically placed in the club. Maul waltzes out of the fire and effortlessly tosses Sam and Dean aside until Garth takes a machete to Maul’s head.

Back at Garth’s home, he thanks the boys for the trip and tells them of a place in Alaska that apparently helps people with bad luck.

Overall, the episode felt light-hearted and airy. The episode is reminiscent to season three’s third episode where Sam is cursed with bad luck and loses his shoe. The episode gives a wholesome send-off to Garth, and it’s inspirational to see a character have a life outside hunting.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
