Tuesday Night Laughs provides virtual comedy

OHIO Involvement and DJ A-Roc are hosting Tuesday Night Laughs, a comedy show  that streams live on Twitch.tv.

Tuesday Night Laughs streams live from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and features a different comedian each week. Prior appearances on the show include Damon Sumner, Tony Tone, Jon Stinger and Spike Davis.

This Tuesday, Keith McGill will be the comedian featured. McGill has performed on cruise lines and was a standup NBC competition finalist.

In the midst of the pandemic, entertainment on campus has been limited and most students haven’t moved back to campus. Ohio Involvement and A-Roc collaborated on the idea to create virtual entertainment, including not only Tuesday Night Laughs but also the Friday Night LIVE show

Since the event is streamed live over Twitch, it allows anyone to join the stream and watch the show.

“People love the Tuesday Night Laughs, it's free and we’re bringing top tier comedians that can rock the entire house,” A-Roc said.

The event has had such a successful turnout that OHIO Involvement and A-Roc are planning to continue the event through to the end of the semester. Initially, the event was only supposed to run for •six weeks.

“We intended to go through October but I think we will go through the whole semester just because of the general turn out and the engagement during the event,” Andrew Holzaepfel, •senior associate director of student activities, said.

The series may make an appearance in the spring if it continues to be a success.

“I think depending on what the university is looking for as far as engagement beginning in Spring Semester, we will definitely keep this in mind as a possible series to continue whether its fully online or converting to in person,” Holzaepfel said. “We’re certainly open to continuing it.”

A-Roc plans to bring in Hispanic comedians & musicians for Hispanic Heritage Month. Holzaepfel plans to roll out the October lineup this week.

“It’s this idea of having virtual entertainment and keeping it diverse,” A-Roc said.

Tuesday Night Laughs is also sponsored by OU Concert Series, BSCPB, Multicultural Center and Campus Involvement Center. As the event was developed, Holzaepfel and A-Roc worked to find ways to support the community.

“The prizes are from OU and Athens,” A-Roc said. “I went out and picked up things from the local bookstores.”

The prizes range from gift cards and mugs, to license plate frames.

Sarah Durk, a junior studying education, entered the giveaway and won Donkey Coffee and Espresso and a travel mug.

“I thought it was fun,” Durk said. “It gave me the vibe of a comedy special which I thought was cool since it's through the university. It was nice to have a DJ that did it from OU so I felt connected to the university while being so far from it.”
