OUPD determines campus bomb threat not credible

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to include new information from recent OHIO alerts.

The Ohio University Police Department received a bomb threat Saturday that has proven to be false.

The source of the bomb threat was determined to be the same as several other false bomb threats made at American universities, according to a 4:56 p.m. OHIO alert. OUPD said in the alert it does not believe a threat to campus exists at this time.

An initial alert was sent at 3:08 p.m. The threat was not believed to be credible, and the Athens campus of OU remained open.

The threat was made via a call to OUPD stating explosives have been placed on campus. OUPD has deployed its bomb-detection K9 unit, according to the initial alert, and was working with both state and federal partners to evaluate the threat.

To report suspicious activity, please call 740-593-1911.
