6 HBO Max shows everyone should watch this winter

Tired of scrolling through Netflix and Hulu for something to watch as the snow continues to fall? No need to look any further. HBO Max is the perfect streaming service to find the right show to binge. Here are some recommendations to add to your watchlist:

Euphoria

By now, even if you don’t have an HBO account, you probably already know exactly what this show entails. With two seasons under its belt, Euphoria tells the stories of multiple high schoolers from a much more chaotic, sensual and mature point of view. Its dark humor and intricate storylines allow this show to be an easy binge; you’ll be on the edge of your seat the whole time. If Zendaya won an Emmy for her performance as a teenage drug-addict, you know it’s bound to be good.

Insecure

Created by actress and writer Issa Rae, Insecure depicts a group of Black women trying to navigate their way through adulthood, work, love and loss. The show focuses heavily on Issa Rae’s character Issa Dee and her best friend Molly’s insecurities, poking fun at their awkward interactions with co-workers and their struggles to keep their thoughts contained. What makes this show so great is the painful, yet humorous, social exchanges between other characters, and Rae’s wittiness along with her amazing freestyle rapping abilities.

The Sex Lives of College Girls

Going viral after its release in 2021, the show’s creator Mindy Kaling did not misinterpret the hardships that all young women face during the challenging transition from high school to college. Starring newcomers Pauline Chalamet, Renee Rap, Amrit Kaur and Alyah Chanelle Scott, The Sex Lives of College Girls depicts the lives of four college freshmen trying to understand their new lives at Essex College. With only 10 episodes in its first season, this show will only leave you wanting more as new relationships between the girls unravel and intersect with each other. It’s definitely a go-to if you’re looking for a heartfelt, relatable comedy series.

Genera+ion

This series could be seen as a knock-off version of Euphoria, but once you get past the cringe-y first few episodes, it’s worth the watch. Genera+on is set in a modern day high school in California, as a group of high school students explore their sexualities and beliefs about life, love and the nature of family. This show is diverse in its point of views. Each character is different in terms of race, gender, sexuality and identity.

Starring Justice Smith and Martha Plimpton, Genera+on surprisingly leaves you wanting more at the end of each episode and creates interesting parallels between the fictional world it inhabits and the current world we live in.

Girls

While this series ended back in 2017, Girls is still a noteworthy show. Set in New York City, the show centers around four women who are all best friends in their early 20s. They all have no clue what they want to do with their lives, which makes creator Lena Dunham’s ironic jokes and sarcasm that much funnier.

Her main character, Hannah, believes she has what it takes to become a famous writer yet doesn’t seem to have anything worth writing about, causing her to turn down new, unexpected paths, meeting unexpected people along the way. If you’re also dying to see a young Adam Driver in his prime, this show is 100% for you.

Scenes from a Marriage

Scenes from a Marriage is a drama miniseries starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac as a couple whose marriage is in shambles. As the show progresses, the themes of shared trauma, guilt, betrayal and adoration all come to the surface. Even though it’s only five episodes, the show is able to pack in all of the couple’s back story into its hour-long runtime. You will leave each episode with tears streaming down your face, angry at the fact that love doesn’t always work the way you want it to.
