Weekender Briefs: Celebrate Athens Pride, enjoy a drag show

Friday, June 10

Walk, Talk and Roll trek through Uptown Athens will begin at 11:30 a.m., beginning on Stimson Avenue near Bella Vino. Hosted by Athens City Commission on Disabilities, this walk through Stimson Avenue, State Street and Court Street to Armory Park will focus on creating connections and providing information. At 12:15 p.m., pizza and refreshments will be provided as participants listen to speakers.

Admission: Free

The UpTown Oldies Bash will take place from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the intersection of the Courthouse and Chase Bank down to the old Armory Building on South Court Street. Hosted by The Plains Lions Club, this two-block cruise-in invites cars, trucks and motorcycles of all sorts to compete for plaques, a 50/50 raffle and a chance auction. 

Admission: $10

Athens Pride Fest – Pride Shuffle kicks off at 8 p.m. at The Pigskin, 38 N. Court St. Organized by Southeastern Ohio Rainbow Alliance, this bar shuffle will kick off Athens Pride Fest, followed by a dance at The Union, 18 W. Union St.

Saturday, June 11

Hilltop Gun Club’s Event commences at 10 a.m. at 675 Pearlwood Rd. This target shooting competition will last until 2 p.m. and feature open site, scope and laser/dot competitions with targets at 100 ft., 300 ft. and 600 ft. Each class winner will be awarded $100 for an entry of 15 shots in 1 minute.

Admission: $10

LGBTQ+ and Ally Pop-up Art Show invites Athens inhabitants to this pride art celebration, lasting from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Chosen Pathways Spiritual Emporium, 400 E. State St. The show will offer outdoor art vendors, indoor activities, rainbow crafts, henna and a raffle to benefit PRISM, LGBTQA+ Youth Arts Program.

Admission: Free

The Kenny Valentine Band will take the stage at 7 p.m. at Uncle Buck’s Riding Stable and Dance Barn, 73930 Buck Lane. The band performs a diverse repertoire of danceable classic and contemporary blues, R&B, funk and ‘70s pop-rock covers alongside their original music. Anyone and everyone are encouraged to come and dance along.

Athens Pride Fest – Drag Show will open doors at 7 p.m. at the Eclipse Company Store, 11309 Jackson Drive. Hosted by Kazma Knights and presented by the Southeast Ohio Rainbow Alliance, this electric show will kick off at 8 p.m. for a night of talented drag queen performances.

Admission: $8

Sunday, June 12

Art Opening with Shaina Meadows will kick off Meadow’s art installation at Casa Nueva Restaurant and Cantina, 6 W. State St., with a party from 4 pm. until 6 p.m. The display and sale will be up until July 3, and the opening offers free Casa Nueva appetizers and music by Frank McDermott.

Athens Pride Fest – Field Day begins at noon at Richland Avenue Park, 8493 Dairy Lane. Hosted by the Southeastern Ohio Rainbow Alliance, the family-friendly field day offers field games, a free bouncy house and food provided by O’Bleness Nutrition Services.
