Athens City Council met Monday and went into a special session before hearing from committees.
During the special session, the body approved a few ordinances, including an ordinance amending the 2022 appropriation ordinance.
The ordinance included $14,500 to the general fund for the mayor to cover the PERS contribution and $25,000 to the arts, parks and recreation income tax fund for storm sewer improvements and the new leased space at the West State Street recreation fields.
Committees heard from the City and Safety Services Committee, which discussed additional expenses to the solid waste contract.
Director of Code Enforcement David Riggs said the city entered a contract with Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers, or AHRC, for solid waste collection in July 2020. The contract will end in June 2023.
Riggs said fuel costs have gone from $2.30, when the contract began, to $5.25 for diesel locally. The contractors estimated fuel costs will be an additional $58,000 for them.
Riggs recommended the body adjust the contract to cover those additional fuel costs.
