Athens High School football team plays against Vinton County, at Joe Burrow Stadium, in Athens Ohio, on Sept. 17, 2022.

Athens Football: Athens travels to Meigs this weekend in search of first win

Athens will make a trip to Meigs high school this Friday to play their third conference game of the year. Athens will once again be looking for its first win of the season.

Both teams will be looking to rebound this week as Athens (0-6, 0-2 TVC-Ohio) is coming off a rough 35-13 loss to Logan, and Meigs (2-4, 1-2 TVC-Ohio) is coming off an even tougher 35-0 loss to Nelsonville-York, one of the best teams in the conference.

To win against the Marauders, the Bulldogs’ defense will have to be at their best. The Marauders scored 134 points this season, making them one of the better offenses in the TVC-Ohio. Earlier in the season, Meigs put up 50 points in a shutout victory over Belpre.

Game Information:

Opponent: Meigs

Venue: Meigs Field

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

News and Notes:

  • Last season Athens was able to beat Meigs 49-35, one of only three wins last season.

  • As the Bulldogs are set to take on one of the best offenses in the conference, their star defensive player, Marcus Stevers, is questionable to play. Stevers missed last week with an injury, and the defense struggled without him, allowing 35 points to Logan.

  • Senior Luke Brandes had a big game on the ground last week as he rushed for 72 yards on 15 attempts and a rushing touchdown.

  • Athens currently sits tied for last in the TVC-Ohio while Meigs is in 4th.
