Athens High School football team plays against Vinton County, at Joe Burrow Stadium, in Athens Ohio, on Sept. 17, 2022.

Athens Football: Athens looks to win second straight game against River Valley

In its penultimate game of the regular season, Athens will take on River Valley (2-6, 1-4 Tri-Valley Conference) in its second straight home conference game at Joe Burrow Stadium. Coming off its first win of the season, Athens will be fired up and ready to get back at it Friday night.

Much like the Bulldogs, the Raiders have struggled to put it together this season, especially in conference play. Coming off back-to-back games where they gave up more than 50 points, the Raiders will be tasked with slowing down a Bulldog offense that is coming off their best performance of the year.

For Athens, this is a must-win game. Next week they take on the best team in the TVC-Ohio, Nelsonville-York. Going into that game with a two-game winning streak would be monumental for the team's late-season success.

Game Information:

Opponent: River Valley

Venue: Joe Burrow Stadium

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

News and Notes:

  • Last year when Athens took on River Valley, it picked up a crushing 35-0 victory.
  • River Valley’s defense has allowed the second most points in the TVC-Ohio with 302, in front of only the last place Wellston.

  • The connection between quarterback Braeden Young and receiver Marcus Stevers will be one to watch this week. The two produced four touchdowns last week along with multiple deep pass connections.

  • Both Athens and River Valley have only one conference win this season, both against Wellston.
