Artist Spotlight: Michèle Ducray’s new EP is intoxicatingly eerie

Fans of the dark and mysterious counterpart to everyday music will not want to miss Michèle Ducray’s upcoming EP, “THRONE OF MINE.” The New Zealand-based dark pop singer and songwriter has released three of the four songs off her upcoming debut EP on streaming platforms and will be releasing the entire compilation on Oct. 6.

Ducray has worked with Simon Gooding (Dua Lipa, Pink), DJ RUEBIK and Liam Quinn (Delta Goodrem, Rita Ora), the latter being the producer, mixer and master of her upcoming EP. The artist has also been featured on some of New Zealand’s biggest radio stations, as well as performing this year at Bay Dreams and Electric Avenue, two of the country's most beloved music festivals.

“THRONE OF MINE” is an exciting collection of songs that flow together seamlessly for an upbeat dark pop adventure. Ducray said in a press statement, "The EP showcases some pivotal times of my life. Using both dark and light pop vibes, I reminisce about my childhood, bullying, failed relationships and even sing about the world ending! It’s a deeply personal record and some parts were tough to record, but we got there in the end!”

The first track on the EP, "Monster," is a perfect representation of the musician's style and capabilities. Her delicate and seductive vocals are emblematic of Melanie Martinez and Britney Spears, while the entire tapestry of the song is reminiscent of the middle years of Panic! At The Disco and The Living Tombstone. The vocal distortions and disorienting, yet totally coordinated electronic background contribute wonderfully. The song is a perfect example of alternative pop, both eerie and melodic with an electronic background.

Following this exciting track is "Psycho," a similar, yet completely different song. This song takes more inspiration from mainstream pop but is given an alternative edge by the dark and twisted lyrics. The song is well-timed with the new wave of “runway songs” on social media platforms and is a must-listen for fans of Ayesha Erotica and her strut-worthy music.

"Ace of Spades" is the last song on the EP that is currently available on streaming platforms, and it takes a different turn from the previous two songs. The melody takes on a more lyrical and flowing path, while still remaining an upbeat and empowering pop anthem. "Ace of Spades" is much more personal and heart-wrenching, and it is the best showcase of Ducray’s vocal talents. The song contains lyrics about a deck of cards, which is a very on-brand use of imagery for the songwriter.

The final track on the EP is also the title track, an apocalyptic and sensual song titled “Throne of Mine.” The song utilizes whimsical and beautiful imagery to immerse listeners completely in her intense electric beats and lucid vocalizations. Her take on perceptions of power and balance are as wise as they are catchy, and it will be released along with the rest of the EP Oct. 6.

“THRONE OF MINE” takes listeners through a whirlwind of styles, from electro-pop to alternative dance to sensual ubiquity. Ducray’s edgy and playful style is perfectly reflected in her confession of being a “fan of the peculiar.” With “THRONE OF MINE,” Ducray crafts a dark world of excitement and melancholia that is immersive and intoxicating.
