Fresh Finds Friday: Brittany Howard, Kid Cudi share new releases

Happy Friday! A new week means new tunes. Just this past week we have new music from Brittany Howard, Kid Cudi and Maple Glider.

Although everyone has their favorite genre of music, we've listed songs that will appeal to any mood or preference. Below are new songs or albums from the past week that are perfect for every occasion.

“What Now” by Brittany Howard

Listeners familiar with the band Alabama Shakes may recognize Brittany Howard, the former frontwoman who embarked on a solo career after Alabama Shakes took a hiatus five years ago. Her new single “What Now” tells a story written during the time of the pandemic “When the question ‘what now?’ was on all of our minds,” Howard said in an Instagram postThe story is told with psychedelic guitar riffs and swingy jazz drums. Howard will also release a limited-edition 7-inch to accompany the single, featuring a B-side song, “Meditation.” That release, available in December, can be pre-ordered here.

“HEAVEN’S GALAXY” by Kid Cudi

It's been a month since we discovered that Kid Cudi was teaming up with “Star Trek” in a teaser video posted to YouTube on Sept.8, and that collaboration is now coming more into light with the release of "HEAVEN'S GALAXY." Cudi, a “Star Trek” fan, said to Rolling Stone: "I grew up watching “Star Trek” with my dad, who is single-handedly responsible for turning me into a fan." The collaboration, titled "Boldy Be," along with "HEAVEN'S GALAXY," will feature a playable character in full U.S.S. Enterprise regalia in the video game Fortnite and a Cudi-Trek-themed merch line. Cudi's anticipated album "Insano" is tentatively set to be released Jan. 24.

“Do You” by Maple Glider

Australian singer/songwriter Maple Glider released her sophomore album, “I Get Into Trouble,” on Oct 13. With 10 songs, “Do You” is one of the more poignant songs off the record and features a music video by Bridgette Winten and Tom Dunphy. On it, Glider airs out the frustrations of a particular someone who refuses to see you for who you are no matter how much time you spend with them, until inevitably, you give up. “I wanted to capture those feelings of loneliness and connectedness I had in those first couple of years in the city,” Glider said. You can watch the “Do You” video here.

“Pepper” by Flowdan, Lil Baby, Skrillex

When UK Drill starts playing and Skrillex is behind the production, it usually means some form of dubstep is ahead. Teaming up with MC Flowdan and Atlanta rap star Lil Baby on "Pepper," which comes with a music video that ties the upcoming Tyson Fury/ Francis Ngannou fight to come, Skrillex and MC Flowdan release their third song together. “Earlier this year, together, they released "Rumble" with Fred again … and "Badders," with Peekaboo and G-Rex.” You can watch the video here, which will surely get you pumped up for this fight set for Oct. 28.

“trust exercises” by easy life

After being forced to change its name due to a lawsuit from the easy jet, English alternative indie pop group easy life is releasing its last single under the name, and what better way to send it on its journey than with one of the original unreleased songs from the earliest of days, “trust exercises.” Originally written six years ago, the band never felt there was a right time to drop the song until now. “We planned to release it in jan, however we only have until friday to get any music out as easy life / so it really is now or never,”  the band wrote in an Instagram post.
