Field Hockey: Looking ahead to Ohio’s weekend matchups

Match Information (Friday):

Opponent: Miami (8-5 overall, 3-0 MAC)

Location: Pruitt Field (Athens)

Time and Date: Oct. 6, 12 p.m.

Ohio (4-4 overall, 2-1 MAC), is coming off of an impressive home win last Friday against Longwood, ending with a final score of 7-0. Ohio’s offense was firing on all cylinders as it saw goals from seven different players during the game. The Bobcats will be looking to pick up a big conference win against their rivals, Miami on Friday.

Miami is coming off of a narrow 2-0 loss at home against Virginia. That game saw Miami struggle mightily on offense. The Redhawks were outshot 19-1 and only had one penalty corner compared to Virginia’s 13. Miami will be looking to rebound against a familiar opponent it has had recent success against. It has won 13 straight matchups against Ohio, and won by a score of 3-0 last year.

Players to Watch:

Three of Ohio’s brightest young stars consisting of Mary Huffman, Johanna Hildebrandt and Emily Beitzel all entered the previous game as substitutions but had a massive impact against Longwood. All three players tacked on a goal for the Bobcats but it was Hildebrandt who stole the show. She had the game's opening goal and added three assists as well.

The Redhawks’ Claudia Negrete Garcia has had a very productive senior season from the midfielder position. She is currently leading Miami in goals, shots, and total points. Miami will need her offensive prowess to bounce back from its scoreless outing against Virginia.

Match Information (Sunday):

Opponent: Wake Forest (4-5 overall, 0-2 ACC)

Location: Pruitt Field (Athens)

Time and Date: Oct. 8, 12 p.m.

Wake Forest will be traveling up to Athens for its last game of a four-game road trip. So far, the Demon Deacons have split their first two games on the road, losing 3-0 against No. 3 Duke, and picking up a 2-0 win against Davidson. Before they face Ohio, they will go to No. 1 Louisville looking to pick up their first ACC win of the season.

Players to Watch:

Freshman midfielder Ava Moore is not only Wake Forest’s leading scorer with two goals on the year, but she is also one of the most efficient players on the team having taken 11 shots to score two goals. It is clear she only needs a few opportunities to provide the Demon Deacons with offensive firepower.
