Fresh Finds Friday: New albums, singles from pop, indie scene

Happy Friday! With the end of the week in sight, it is another week with new music. This past week, we have new music from Vampire Weekend, Yeat and more.

Here are five new songs you should check out:

"Capricorn" by Vampire Weekend

Stirring up excitement from longtime listeners is American indie rock group Vampire Weekend, known for its hit single "A-Punk." The band has released two singles, "Capricorn" and "Gen-X Cops." Both feature an apocalyptic visual in their respective music videos, giving a taste of the band's forthcoming project, "Only God Was Above Us." The new project marks its first album in five years, following the release of 2019's project, "Father of the Bride." Expect to see "Only God Was Above Us" on April 5.

"Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" by HEALTH

Three years ago, HEALTH teamed up with Chino Moreno of Deftones on “ANTI-LIFE.” Now, HEALTH covers another Deftones song, “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away).” The band keeps the eerie vibes of the 1997 original with HEALTH, adding what they do best: electronic noise. It also includes crushing drums and a reverb effect that makes the song seem like it’s playing in an abandoned factory. It truly adds up to the industrial vibe HEALTH usually plays into.

"2093" by Yeat

Rarely is there a rapper who transcends the music world as Yeat has with his eye-turning song titles, adding accents and even making up his own words such as “tonka” or “twizzy” in songs like “Monëy so big" and “Twizzy Rich." Tonka is loosely translated to a luxury vehicle, while twizzy is similar to twin.

The words are so intriguing a fan made a different version of the Google translate app entitled Twizzy Translate, which can translate his lyricism. Now releasing his fourth studio album, Yeat’s "2093" will feature Lil Wayne and Future and span 22 songs set in a psycho-apocalyptic world where Yeat is the CEO of a business of his creation in 2093.

"TEXAS HOLD' EM" by Beyoncé

Beyoncé made history by topping the recent Billboard Country Music Chart, continuing on her latest trend of twangy new country singles in "16 Carriages" and now "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." The singer joins the likes of Taylor Swift as the only solo woman to clinch the achievement, while also becoming the first woman to top both the Hot Country and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop song charts.

"Yeern 101" by ScHoolboy Q

Top Dawg Entertainment artist ScHoolboy Q is known for his long waits between projects. Many of his fans are itching for his forthcoming project, "Blue Lips," which is set to release on March 1. The rapper has given us a little taste of the upcoming "Yeern 101" project. Over a twitchy clipped bass drum loop, ScHoolboy Q raps about drastic changes in his life

From days on Hollywood shoots to taking friends to the opera, he challenges the status quo by taking up spaces he wouldn't traditionally belong in. You can watch the music video here.
