Police Blotter: Bee attack, K9 Cody

Wednesday, July 23

Break-in: Door edition

A break-in was reported to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office at a home located at South Street in The Plains.

The caller told deputies she found the back door open when she came home.

The door was discovered not to be broken upon further investigation, and the caller had maintenance fix the door.

Was the safety on?

Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Wooten Road and Pennington Lane in Albany after receiving a report of people shooting too close to the road.

At the scene, deputies found the people were no longer shooting, but it was in a safe manner.

Thursday, July 24

Not a unanimous decision

Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a dispute at Mine Road in Nelsonville.

At the scene, the deputies spoke with the two involved and determined one party had left the scene already. One of the involved parties wanted to file a trespassing complaint while the other one did not.

A trespassing complaint was served for one of the involved parties’ properties.

Oh no! The bees!

According to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, a man was reported screaming and punching himself in the face at Grand Street in Hockingport.

The man told the deputies at the scene, he had gotten into some bees and was trying to escape. Deputies identified the man and discovered he had a warrant out of Meigs County for drug possession.

The man was arrested and taken to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

Friday, July 25

They were close enough

A complainant called the Athens County Sheriff’s Office to complete a trespassing complaint for two people.

After deputies gained further information from the complainant, they determined the people actually did not trespass, meaning no trespass complaint could be filed.

Deputies told the complainant to call if the people showed up at the residence.

Only playtime

A report of a fight with possible gunshots taking place in New Marshfield Park was filed with the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies discovered none of the alleged activity was happening and several kids were playing at the park. The kids were taken home safely by deputies.

Saturday, July 26

Night riders

Athens County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a suspicious person complaint at Simms Road.

Deputies spoke with a man and woman at the scene who said two suspicious people were riding their bikes late at night. The area was patrolled to locate the people to no success.

“Phoney” dispute

An active dispute was happening at West Main Street in Glouster and was reported to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies talked to those involved upon arrival and found the dispute was happening over a stolen phone. The phone was retrieved, and the phone’s owner did not wish to press charges.

Everyone involved was warned by deputies for disorderly conduct.

Sunday, July 27

Hackerman

A threatening report was filed with the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, leading to deputies being dispatched to Meadowbrook Road in Albany.

The complainant said her old Facebook account was hacked, and the hacker was threatening to release nude photos. Deputies determined the hacker was using the account to ask family members for money.

The case remained under investigation at the time the media report was released.

Good boy

A traffic stop was conducted by Athens County Sheriff’s Deputies patrolling state Route 682 for an equipment violation.

As deputies spoke with the driver, criminal indicators were seen, leading to Cody, a K9 unit, being dispatched. Cody caught the scent of drugs and narcotics, and deputies searched the vehicle. Several pieces of drug paraphernalia were discovered and contained suspected drugs and narcotics.

All pieces of applicable evidence will be sent to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation/Identification for testing and future charges.

Cody was promised extra treats and love as a reward upon returning to the office during business hours.

Monday, July 28

“Gravely” complaint

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Hawks Road in Athens for vehicles being reported abandoned and parked along the roadway.

Contact was made with the owner of the property where the vehicles were parked on who said the vehicles were moved there because a trucking company was bringing gravel to cover the lot. The owner confirmed the vehicles would be picked up later this week.

False alarm

A report was received by the Athens County Sheriff’s Office for an active business alarm going off at Pleasant Hill Road.

While en route, deputies were called off because the alarm was found to be false.

Tuesday, July 29

A man with a gun barricades

A man was reported to have a gun and caused a barricaded situation for the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.

The special response team and drone unit responded to the situation. Shortly after arriving at the scene, the man was arrested.

Further investigation and more possible charges are currently pending at the time of the media release.

Athens County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to Birge Drive in Chauncey for two children getting off a bus and looking lost. 

Contact was made with the children and their parents. The children were brought to a home in Glouster.
