Gilmore Girls documentary announced, receives mixed feedback

Amid celebrations of the 25th anniversary of “Gilmore Girls,” a documentary about the show titled “Searching for Stars Hollow,” was announced. Presented by Ink On Paper studios and funded completely by Kickstarter, the documentary has promised to transform everything viewers know about “Gilmore Girls,” holding the future film to a high standard.

The exact release date and location are still unknown. However, the company announced it will debutsometime in October. The television show “Gilmore Girls” is currently available on Disney+, as well as a few other streaming services.

The documentary is slated to combine interviews with the cast and crew. It is unclear whether Lauren Graham or Alexis Bledel, the two lead actors of the show, will be participating in this film. Melissa McCarthy, who played fan favorite supporting character Sookie, is not confirmed to appear either. Cast members who have already been interviewed include Kelly Bishop, Jared Padaleck, Chad Michael Murray, Keiko Agena, Sally Struthers, Liz Torres* and Emily Kuroda.

Directors Meghna Balakumar and Kevin Konrad Hanna are joined by Executive Producer Adam F. Goldberg.

Although some fans are excited about the documentary, others are wondering who has been asking for this.

A limited miniseries “A Year in the Life” premiered in 2016, starring Graham and Bledel. The show earned an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Others called it “subpar.” After this slightly controversial addition, the idea of a documentary was questioned.

Some fans expressed their concerns. As it was a TV show, some people wondered why it warranted a documentary. The uncertainty behind whether the two stars will appear adds to the skepticism of the film.

Others believe the documentary is obligated to answer some of the franchise's unanswered questions.

Unsurprisingly, fans want to see what the Gilmore girls are up to. At the end of “A Year in the Life,” Rory Gilmore announces she’s pregnant. Twice the age her mother, Lorelai Gilmore was when she was pregnant, she is in a healthy spot in life to have a child. The issue is the viewers are not told who the father is or what her plans are. Some fans are wondering if the documentary will clear up speculation.

Lane Kim’s character growth is another burning question for the documentary. Her character in the show was given a cool opportunity, as she was part of a band, had a great boyfriend and was hiding everything from her mother. As the series progressed, her character did not change.

Kim was able to stop hiding her life from her family, but it went downhill from there. In the mini-series, Kim is a mom of twins who owns her mother’s old store, having given up music and never moving away.

Fans are hoping in the documentary, the actress who played Kim, Keiko Agena, will discuss the character and lack of development. Since Kickstarter is completely funding the documentary, Agena has no obligation to please the original production company and has more freedom.

In addition to the plot, fans are eager for new behind-the-scenes details about production. Ink On Paper promised to share what it was like to make the show, so fans are expecting to be surprised and learn something new about their favorite show.

Honoring Edward Herrmann is also a requirement for some “Gilmore Girls” lovers. Herrmann played Rory Gilmore’s grandfather in the original series, but was not present in the mini-series due to his death. His character, Richard Gilmore, was a central and well-loved character of the show. People are hoping the film celebrates the relationships he had with his co-stars, both on and off screen.

Though the two leads are still not confirmed to return, many cast and crew members are excited to discuss “Gilmore Girls” and the show's highlights. Hopefully, Ink On Paper will provide the details fans want to see and help clear up lingering misconceptions and questions.
