Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce engaged, brands create marketing tactics

When Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement via Instagram a week ago, there was nonstop discussion on the internet.

Multiple brands seized the opportunity to post their own twist on the announcement as a marketing strategy, and creators on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram immediately reposted the news and shared their reactions.

Since the beginning of their relationship, some have been left confused about how their romance became an internet phenomenon. Some speculated the relationship was a “PR stunt.”

Their relationship almost feels straight out of one of Swift’s songs, as it has been foreshadowed in Swift's lyrics since the beginning of her career.

Dating the boy on the football team” was a heavily used trope in her earlier works. Her current relationship endeavors, attending his games and cheering him on, feel like a full-circle nostalgic moment for her earliest fans.

She explained this phenomenon in her recent feature on Jason and Travis Kelce’s podcast “New Heights,” and said, “This is what I’ve been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.”

Their relationship has also been more public than any of Swift's previous relationships, with her attending his games and him not only attending her tour, but being on stage during one of her performances of “I can do it with a broken heart”.

Swift and Kelce have been open about their relationship almost since the beginning, leading the public to get attached to their story and root for their “happy ending,” which this engagement symbolizes.

Brands were quick to add to the engagement discourse, such as Panera posting “It’s a loaf story baby, just say yeast” in reference to her podcast appearance, where they joked about bread puns in relation to Swift's songs.

Duolingo replied to the announcement on X with “but when will it be your Spanish teacher’s turn” in reference to Swift's caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

Buffalo Wild Wings offered to cater their wedding in all caps on X shortly after the announcement on Instagram.

Swift's die-hard fans have been awaiting this day since the singer first released her songs about unrequited love and hopeless romantic ballads.

They have seen her fall in and out of love throughout the years and are happy to see her living out the fantasies she's written about in her songs. Her career has become a “love story” that her fans have eagerly been waiting for her to say “yes.”
