Athens City Council candidates secure seats

The following vote amounts and percentages are from unofficial results as of 9:08 p.m. Tuesday.

All Athens City Council candidates ran unopposed and secured their seats on Election Day. Megan Leah Almeida, D-1st Ward; John Adams Staser, D-2nd Ward and Paul Isherwood, At-Large succeed Solveig Spjeldnes, Jeff Risner and Micah McCarey, respectively. 

Incumbents Beth Clodfelter, At-Large Representative; Jessica Thomas, At-Large Representative; Alan Swank, D-4th Ward and Michael Wood, D-3rd Ward, remain in their current seats. Joshua Thomas was reelected as city treasurer. 

Councilmembers are elected to two-year terms, with no term limits. All councilmembers who were reelected are Democrats, according to a previous report by The Post

Risner and Spjeldnes did not seek reelection, and McCarey ran for and won Council president. 

Almeida graduated from Ohio University in 2014 with a bachelor’s in natural science and outdoor education and previously worked for Rural Action.

Ahead of the election, Swank said his focus is to listen and act on citizens' concerns, placing special attention on how Athens spends tax dollars, according to The Post report. 

Swank began his first term in January 2022, and most notably, developed the plastic bag ban, which has since been overturned, in collaboration with Athens ReThink Plastics, according to a previous report by The Post.

Clodfelter was the regional representative for Sen. Sherrod Brown and ran for county treasurer last year. 

Joshua Thomas was elected treasurer in 2021 and ran as a write-in in 2023, according to a previous report by The Post. He also serves as the senior director of Digital Workspaces at OU. 

As of 9:08 p.m., the unofficial results from the Athens County Board of Elections report Almeida received 252 votes, Staser received 339 and Isherwood received 1,255 votes. Clodfelter received a total of 1,322 votes, Jessica Thomas received 1,304 votes, Swank was reelected with 402 votes and Wood received 422 votes. Joshua Thomas was reelected as city treasurer with 1,483 votes. 

Council meets in regular session every first and third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the City Building.
