An alleged grease fire broke out in the kitchen of Jackie O’s Public House Restaurant at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on 22 W. Union St. The exact time the fire burned is unknown, according to the Chief of the Athens Fire Department, Robert Rymer.
According to an Instagram post by Jackie O’s, the Public House will be closed until further notice. The post also said it may mean being closed until the end of the year.
The post confirmed the damage was significant, but everyone was evacuated early enough that no one was hurt.
“We are incredibly grateful for all of the well wishes sent our way and to the Athens Fire Department for their quick response and amazing work making sure everyone was safe,” the post said.
According to Rymer, the damage was extensive but could be contained to the kitchen area. The building sustained water and smoke damage, with AFD even having to tear up the ceiling with forcible entry tools.
“We went in with all kinds of different tools, hooks and forcible entry tools, in order to try and open up the ceiling so we can make sure it didn't extend anywhere,” Rymer said.
The Union sustained slight smoke damage and possible water damage due to the fire.
There are no known injuries at this time.
“I have not heard of anyone being hurt, but I've yet to interview anybody to find out what's going on,” he said.
The Athens Fire Department evacuated individuals in apartments above Jackie O’s and in buildings next to the restaurant.
