Hannah Montana finds her way back home for 20th anniversary special

Grab your blonde wigs and get ready for the best of both worlds. The Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special is coming to Disney+ on March 24 hosted by Alex Cooper.

Hannah Montana first premiered on Disney Channel in March 2006. The series centered around Miley Stewart, a regular teenage girl by day and pop star by night, played by Miley Cyrus. The show displays the complexities of her living her double life, including how hard it is to keep her identity a secret, using her iconic blonde wig.

In a viral 2019 video, Cyrus has shown her remembrance and seeming willingness to return to her Hannah Montana character. In the video, she is singing the show’s theme, “Best of Both Worldswith her hair dyed blonde and bangs cut.

In 2024, Cyrus was honored at Disney D23 as the youngest Disney legend for her role in Hannah Montana. Fans have speculated for some time whether she would ever reboot Hannah Montana, and Cyrus has always seemed open to the idea.

In a July 2025 interview on “On Air with Ryan Seacrest,” Cyrus mentioned wanting to “design something really, really special” for the 20th anniversary.

The interview led fans to speculate that Cyrus may have been hinting at a tour as Hannah Montana. Fans on TikTok were posting videos with the caption, “If you can’t sing every word to this song, you shouldn’t be allowed at the 2026 Hannah Montana concert.”

This started a social media trend among millennials and Gen Z, who posted that there should be age limits for the concert, believing that it should be 25 and up to attend. This upset the younger Gen Z audience, who vocalized that they also grew up with Hannah Montana, posting old photos of themselves with their memorabilia from the 2000s.

With little to no information on what Cyrus’s plans were for March, the concert theory took over. Fans were convinced there would be a tour, while others pulled in evidence from Cyrus expressing in an interview for Good Morning America that she cannot physically tour again.

“I wish I had the desire, but I don’t,” Cyrus said.

Fast forward to Feb. 17, Disney+, Cyrus and Cooper posted the teaser for the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special on social media. Cooper, the host of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, founder of The Unwell Network and Unwell Hydration, has been made the host for this special. This choice has gotten a large amount of backlash from fans.

“Alex Cooper hosting the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary is all wrong and actually a disgrace,” one X user wrote.

Disney+ also put out an article the same day, stating it will be filmed in front of a live studio audience, with an in-depth interview featuring Cooper and Cyrus.

The teaser features a studio in the background, when a car pulls up with the license plate “HM 20” in the show’s iconic sparkly purple and gold. Then a pair of tall boots steps out of the car, and the audience is left with that. There were no details of Cyrus' look, or a preview of what's to come, besides a special on March 24.

“Hannah Montana will always be part of who I am,” Cyrus said in a recent statement. “This Hannahversary is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who stood by me for 20 years.”

This special sounds like it is made with the fans completely in mind. She has even cut bangs in her natural hair and has it dyed blonde again for the occasion.

On Feb. 22, it was reported that paparazzi had captured Cyrus dressed up as Hannah Montana. She was driving the car that seemed to be used in the promotional video. She was wearing the iconic blonde wig with bangs and a gold scarf belt, giving full Y2K. This has blown up all over social media in the last week. Giving fans great insight into her look for the special, and more of what fans can expect for it.

Another photo of Miley on set wearing a pink studded outfit has been going around on TikTok. Some fans claimed it was AI-generated, giving them a false look into the special. However, it is not confirmed if the photos are AI-generated.

Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special will premiere on March 24 exclusively on Disney+.
