Human Interest staff shares favorite local bands

In Athens, there is no shortage of talent right here at home.

“My favorite local band is The Lounge Club,” Liv Jacobs, a freshman studying journalism, said. “I've known the bass guitar player for a while and attended almost all of the performances it had on campus. From the Battle of the Greens to playing an opening set at Donkey Coffee, it has a great stage presence and really knows how to draw in an audience. It plays mainly indie music, performing mostly covers of artists like Pink Floyd and The Backseat Lovers, but has a couple of original songs as well.”

“Ready Aim Flowers is my favorite local band,” Emma Snyder-Lovera, a senior studying journalism and media arts production, said. “I’ve seen them a couple of times, most recently on New Year’s Eve at The Union, and they put on such a fun, electric show. I would describe them as an upbeat, indie-folk band. Their music captures the Athens spirit. I also really enjoy the band Futz, a great rock group that I’ve seen play a few times. Both their covers and originals are enjoyable listens.”

“I've been involved in the Athens music scene pretty deeply for a few years, so I've heard and seen a lot of different musicians,” Ethan Herx, a junior studying photojournalism, said. “As for regionally, I'd have to say Darrin Hacquard is my favorite. He's an Americana/country artist from Logan, though he's now based out of Huntington, West Virginia. I've seen him three times. As for purely Athens bands, my favorite is probably Drawknife. It is a bluegrass duo here in town that puts on an amazing show, and I've seen it perform twice.”

“I do not have much experience with local bands in Athens, but based on research I have done, I would have to choose the Come On Come Ons,” Aleni Bender, a sophomore studying communication, said. “They are a jazz/rock band, and the community seems to enjoy their shows.”

“My favorite local band is Hourglass,” Gina Napoli, a junior studying journalism, said. “I wrote a feature about the band in March and had the opportunity to speak with the members. They were incredibly kind and talented and made writing the feature so fun. Its style of music is alternative indie rock, and I highly recommend listening.”
