On April 12, ImStillDissin on X claimed to have been sent the entirety of “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.”
Along with this tweet, the account shared two scenes that appeared to be from the movie. This caused many conversations to break out among Avatar fans. Some fans seemed to think the leaked scenes were being received so well that it proved the film should be released in theaters and not directly onto Paramount+.
Later, ImStillDissin posted again, stating, “If Paramount doesn't post a trailer within the next couple (of) days or something, I'll livestream the movie alongside some Peggle Deluxe gameplay.”
This eventually led to the entire movie being shared on the internet. The post has since been taken down. Despite this, many people downloaded the film, and spoilers and edits have already taken over the internet. ImStillDissin’s X account biography now reads, “didn't do anything wrong."
Those who worked on the film for years seem to disagree, with animator Julia Schoel sharing on X, “This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”
Michaela Jill Murphy, the original voice actress of Toph, made a video sharing her opinion on the leak. In her video, Murphy said, “If you wanna be respectful, and if you wanna know how I feel, stop sharing it, stop consuming it, stop talking about it and watch it when it comes out.”
Originally, "The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” was supposed to come out in January, then the release date was pushed to October. In December, it was announced that there would not be a theatrical release.
It would instead go straight to streaming on Paramount+. This disappointed fans for multiple reasons. Some who were participating in the boycott of Paramount were disappointed because they still wanted to see the movie. Others were simply disappointed because they would be missing out on the theater-going experience.
The movie was first announced in 2022. At the time, it was announced that the show's original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, would be returning as producers, and Lauren Montgomery, who worked on “Avatar: The Last Airbender” as a storyboard artist, would be directing.
The majority of the voice actors were announced at CinemaCon 2024. Before this, Jessica Matten had been announced to be the voice actor of Katara in November 2023. Musician Eric Nam was announced to be Aang. In addition to music and acting, Nam was also on the most recent season of the United States version of “The Traitors."
Along with Nam, Román Zaragoza was announced to be voicing Sokka. Fans were excited as this is the first time Sokka, a character whose culture takes inspiration from Inuit culture, would be played by an Indigenous actor. Zaragoza is most recognizable as the character Sasappis in the United States version of “Ghosts."
Dionne Quan was announced to play Toph. This would be the first time Toph was voiced by someone legally blind. Quan has done a lot of voice acting over the years, working on series such as “Rugrats,” “Bratz” and “The Fairly OddParents.”
Also at CinemaCon 2024, Dave Bautista was announced to be playing a then unnamed antagonist. Though the character’s name is known now due to the leak, the name was never officially released. Bautista is most known for his time portraying Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Steven Yeun was announced to be playing Zuko at San Diego Comic Con 2025. Some of Yeun’s other voice acting roles include starring as Mark Grayson in "Invincible" and Paladin Keith Kogane in “Voltron: Legendary Defender.”
There is lots of speculation about whether the movie will still be released. Some fans are urging their fellow fans not to watch the movie until it is officially released. Other fans believe that not only should "The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” still be released, it should be released in theaters. Some even think that the release date should be moved up since the excitement for the movie is still very high.
Though many fans saw the movie already or even downloaded it before it was taken down, there are still many fans who are holding out hope that there will still be an official release.
