Women’s Golf: Ohio finishes 16th at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge

The Ohio Women’s Golf team recently traveled to Pawley’s Island, South Carolina, to compete against 18 other schools in the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge.

The Bobcats finished in 16th after posting a team total of +77 over three days down south. Three other teams from the Mid-American Conference competed, as Ball State, Akron and Western Michigan all finished ahead of Ohio in the challenge.

It was Middle Tennessee State who took home the win after shooting a very solid +24 over three days, with an impressive +5 on day one and +6 on day two.

Ohio sent five golfers in total, with freshman Paige Treherne, junior Morgan Rodgers, sophomore Ally Turner, junior Zoe Luebbers and senior McKenzie McRee all competing for the Bobcats.

Rodgers was the best Bobcat throughout the week, and she started hot on day one, shooting +4, with three birdies, coming on a par five, par four and par three.

Treherne was solid as well on the opening day of the tournament, shooting +6 with just one birdie on the par five second hole, but solid golf all around, going for 10 pars to open her week. Turner would follow Rodgers and Treherne as she shot +7 in the first round, and Luebbers and McRee would follow, shooting +9 and +10 in the first round, respectively.

The second was more of the same for Rodgers, as the Centerville native put up an even better day on day two in the second round.

She ended the second round with a 73, just +2 on the day. She only had a single birdie that came on the par four fourth hole, but she limited her bogeys and racked up a whopping 14 pars, as she finished her round with seven straights to close her fantastic day. Her great start to the week put her in 24th place overall after the first two rounds.

Luebbers also had a great second round, finishing just one stroke behind Rodgers after shooting a 74, which put her at +3 on the day. That great round included two birdies and the only eagle of the week for Ohio, which came on the par five eighth hole.

To close out the second day, McRee would shoot a 77, putting her at +6. Turner would finish her second round at +9 after shooting an 80 on day two, and Treherne shot an 84, putting her at +13 on the day.

After the good start over the first two days of the challenge, Ohio posted its worst day in the final round on day three.

Treherne bounced back from the tough day in the second round and had the best round three out of the five Bobcats competing, as she shot a 77, putting her at +6 on the day.

Luebbers and McRee were the only other Bobcats to break 80 in the final round, as they shot a 79 and a 78, respectively.

Rodgers would end her week with an 81, putting her at +10 on the day, and Turner finished her third round by shooting an 84.

Ohio will be back on the course for the final time before the MAC Tournament next weekend in Columbus, as it will be competing in the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational, hosted by Ohio State.
