At the start of my freshman year, I made a bucket list of everything I wanted to accomplish before graduation. Time has just flown these last four years, and now it’s time to wrap up my undergraduate experience here at Ohio University. Some of the things on my list were absolute must-dos for me, and others I found that I could’ve just skipped. So, here's my updated list of things you must do in Athens before you graduate:
Attend at least one game of every OU sport
This is a pretty big task, but a truly fun one. I can’t say I completely accomplished this, but I did go to at least one game for a good amount of the teams here on campus.
Don’t overlook the spring sports like softball and baseball. Those games are super fun, but most of the time, they can be forgotten about because the year is at a very busy point when they play.
Experience every “big” weekend
You’ve got to go out for Athens’ “big” weekends at least once: Homecoming, Halloween, Santa Fest, Fest Season, Family Weekends. Just go check them out with your friends; if they aren’t for you, that’s OK! At least go see what they’re like so you can say that you did!
Network, network, network
The OU alumni network is strong, and they aren’t lying when they say you can pretty much find a Bobcat wherever. Most alumni want to help students and other alumni in their field, so take advantage of that resource. LinkedIn and campus events with alumni will be your best friends. Make connections you can look to once you enter the job market.
Sample the local cuisine
There are some true dining gems here in Athens. Make it a point to try as many as you can while you are here. I know I’m definitely going to miss take-out from Siam Thai and late-night snacks at Souvlaki’s after a night out.
Intern with a community organization or business
The spirit of the city of Athens, by far, is its love for community. It’s a feeling that just radiates from the town. The people here are different; they’re special. A love for Athens connects us, and it’s something you just can’t understand until you spend time here.
Some of my most worthwhile and influential career experiences here at OU have been with my Athens internships. That’s why I’d recommend everyone to find an opportunity here in the community that aligns with your career goals. Not only will you gain valuable experience, but your love for this town and its people will grow.
There were also things on my list that are just obvious must-dos: see a movie at the Athena Cinema, have a picnic on College Green, spend the day at Strouds Run or Hocking Hills, see the cherry blossoms, join campus organizations, etc.
All in all, however cliché it may sound, just make the most of your time here. Experience everything you can. Spend as little time in your dorm or apartment, and just be out in Athens. Because trust me, when you’re a senior, you’re going to be taking in every last second here and wishing there was more time.
Thank you, Athens and OU. You’ve given me so much: friends who have become family, experiences and connections that have set me on my career path and memories I will cherish for life. Bobcats always and forever!
