With the fourth quarter less than a minute old, DeVon Sharp got a breakaway layup and on the ensuing play stole the ball passed the ball Dean Maffin who scored.

At that point,  Athens went ahead by five points and gained the separation it needed to win 59-53 against New Lexington.

Those plays were indicative of the Bulldogs play in the second half, but the team got off to a slow start with a total of 18 points in the first half.

“I thought we looked disinterested, but I also thought New Lexington looked disinterested as well,” coach Jeff Skinner said. “As we slowed down we were able to get more production.”

Production was exactly what the Bulldogs got, scoring 41 points in the second half.  Skinner said that his team does not score a lot in games but they are able to score in bunches.

Dean Maffin scored 26 points and matched Jacob Kozad (who had 27) point for point.

“Dean has been the guy that makes shots for us, he has a shooter’s mentality,” Skinner said.

Athens moves on to its next game against Warren at Logan High school.
