The Mid-Amercan Conference and the University of Massachusetts will hold a news conference Wednesday, likely to announce the addition of UMass to the conference.
The conference announced the news conference, which will take place at Gillette Stadium, via Twitter Tuesday morning. The Plain Dealer's Elton Alexander reported that Umass will join the MAC for football only starting in 2012. UMass would not be eligible for a MAC bowl bid or MAC Championship game appearance until 2013.
The move gives the conference 14 teams, which most likely means there will be some movement of teams in the divisions. If the MAC wants to keep the same division format it has in basketball, the most logical move would be to add UMass to the West Division and keep everything else the same. There could be a total restructure, though.
